Woody Johnson Assures If Not Traded Zach Wilson Will Remain In The Team

Owner Woody Johnson presented an intriguing alternative to the long-expected split, but the New York Jets are still determined to move former starting quarterback Zach Wilson, the organization announced on Monday.

Woody Johnson Assures If Not Traded Zach Wilson Will Remain In The Team

At the NFL’s league meeting, Johnson said to a small group of reporters, “If we don’t trade him, we’re going to keep him.”

Johnson, who withdrew his criticism of Wilson’s 2023 performance this month, may have done so in an attempt to revive interest in the former first-round choice. In his words, Wilson was “a valuable asset.” The second thing he said was that Wilson, who has been struggling since Week 1 after taking Aaron Rodgers’ injury, would be better off in a trade.

It was unexpected to hear Johnson declare the Jets might think about hanging onto Wilson. Johnson may have just been posturing on Monday to attempt to prevent damaging whatever trade value Wilson may have.

Johnson agreed that Wilson would benefit more from starting again with a different squad.

“From his standpoint, it’s probably better if he changes faces and gets to a new place and he can wipe the slate clean,” Johnson said. “I think that would probably be better for him.”

“Zach is a valuable asset,” Johnson said. “I said it would be better for him. No, we’re not just going to release him.”

In an attempt to improve the backup position, the Jets inked 34-year-old Tyrod Taylor to a $12 million, two-year contract. Taylor was described by coach Robert Saleh as “an elite locker room presence.” At some time, they will bring in a third quarterback, maybe a youngster. Or, as Johnson suggests, Wilson may be that person.

“I feel badly about Zach in some ways because last year it would’ve been a great — it would’ve been the first time he could just sit back and watch a master at work, and he’s never had that,” Johnson stated.
