- WASSam Howell Likely To Start For Commanders Next Season
In their pursuit of a new offensive coordinator, the Washington Commanders have reportedly been informing candidates that they would be working with Sam Howell as the starting quarterback next season. Howell took the field for his first career start in Week 18 and led the Commanders to a divisional win over the Dallas Cowboys. The rookie, who was selected in the fifth round of the 2022 NFL Draft, demonstrated his ability through the air and on the ground as he scored both a passing and rushing touchdown in his regular-season debut. Howell began the season behind Carson Wentz and Taylor Heinicke on the depth chart, but Wentz is unlikely to remain in Washington in 2023 and Heinicke will enter unrestricted free agency this offseason.

The Washington Commanders parted ways with offensive coordinator Scott Turner on Tuesday, according to sources. Turner had been with head coach Ron Rivera for seven seasons, including the last three in Washington. He'll move on after the Commanders finished a third straight season with poor offensive rankings -- 20th in total yards and 26th in points in 2022. There appeared to be a divide between Rivera's vision of a power running game and Turner's vertical passing attack, and players were critical of it down the stretch. With Turner now gone, it's good news for the team's RBs heading into 2023, especially Brian Robinson Jr. as he heads into his sophomore season. The quarterback situation must be addressed as well, with Washington potentially moving on from Carson Wentz.

When asked about the team's plan at quarterback and whether QB Carson Wentz will be with the organization in 2023, Washington Commanders general manager Martin Mayhew said, "We're currently working through all that." In his first year in D.C., Wentz struggled with injuries and inconsistent performances, posting a 62.3% completion percentage, a career-low 1,755 passing yards, 11 touchdowns and nine interceptions in just eight games played (seven starts). The 30-year-old will have a $26.1 million salary cap hit in 2023 if he sticks on the roster. He has no dead cap hit either, so there's a very good chance Wentz will find himself on the open market this offseason. If that happens, Sam Howell and Taylor Heinicke could compete for the starting job, depending on who else the organization brings in at the position.

Washington Commanders running back Antonio Gibson underwent surgery Thursday to repair a fracture to his foot. Gibson has played with the injury for several weeks, but with the Commanders officially out of playoff contention, the team decided to go with the procedure. Gibson finishes the season with 546 rushing yards, 353 receiving yards, and five total touchdowns before being placed on Injured Reserve. If there's a new staff in town for the Commanders next season, he could see a role change. If Ron Rivera remains the head coach, he'll likely be stuck in a pure committee backfield with Brian Robinson.

Washington Commanders running back Jonathan Williams is in line to be the featured running back in Week 18 against the Dallas Cowboys, as Brian Robinson Jr. (knee) and Antonio Gibson (foot) have been ruled out. Gibson underwent foot surgery, while Robinson's injury is considered to be more minor. The Cowboys have allowed the second-fewest fantasy points to running backs this season, and with rookie quarterback Sam Howell making his first career start, Williams' touchdown upside will be limited. Jaret Patterson will also likely see some work behind Williams.

Washington Commanders rookie running back Brian Robinson Jr. (knee) has officially been ruled out for the Week 18 regular season finale against the Dallas Cowboys on Sunday. The Commanders will be without both Robinson and Antonio Gibson (foot, knee), who was placed on Injured Reserve on Thursday. Robinson had a very impressive first NFL season, considering he was shot in the knee in training camp and didn't make his debut until Week 5. He'll finish with 205 carries for 797 yards (3.9 yards per carry) and two touchdowns, adding nine catches on 12 targets for 60 yards and another score in 12 games. Robinson eventually became Washington's lead back and should enter 2023 as their primary ball-carrier on early downs. With Robinson and Gibson out against Dallas, expect Jonathan Williams to see most of the backfield work, with Jaret Patterson backing him up.

Washington Commanders rookie running back Brian Robinson Jr. (knee) is missing from practice on Thursday for the second straight day this week. The Commanders also put Antonio Gibson (foot, knee) on Injured Reserve on Thursday, so the team would be left with Jonathan Williams and Jaret Patterson in their backfield in Week 18 against the Dallas Cowboys if Robinson isn't healthy enough to play. Washington is already eliminated from postseason contention, so even if Robinson practices on Friday and is cleared to play Sunday, there's a very real possibility that he's limited this weekend in the final game of the 2022 season. Check back on Friday for the 23-year-old's official status heading into the weekend.
Source : RotoBallerUpdated : Jan 5, 2023, 5:35:03 PM - WASInjured Antonio Gibson Placed On Injured Reserve
The Washington Commanders placed running back Antonio Gibson (foot, knee) on Injured Reserve on Thursday, so he will not finish out the regular season in Week 18 against the Dallas Cowboys. In corresponding moves, the team signed running back Jaret Patterson from the practice squad to the active roster and signed running back Reggie Bonnafon to the practice squad. Gibson's injuries aren't serious, so he should have a normal offseason. The 24-year-old took a back seat to rookie Brian Robinson Jr. for most of the year and finishes his third NFL season with a career-low 149 carries for 546 yards and three touchdowns while adding a career-high 46 catches (58 targets) for 353 yards and two more TDs in 15 games (six starts). Jonathan Williams will be Robinson's direct backup to close things out on Sunday.
Source : RotoBallerUpdated : Jan 5, 2023, 5:08:53 PM - WASSam Howell To Start In Week 18
Updating a previous report, Washington Commanders quarterback Sam Howell will start the Week 18 matchup against the Dallas Cowboys. The rookie quarterback will make his first career start on Sunday. While the former North Carolina star hasn't played during the regular season, Howell was productive during the preseason. He averaged 182.3 passing yards per game and had two rushing touchdowns in three games. With the Commanders eliminated from the playoffs, it's no surprise the team will give the rookie a chance this week. The future at the quarterback position is up in the air in Washington. Maybe Howell can show enough potential on Sunday to warrant consideration as the long-term starter.
Source : RotoBallerUpdated : Jan 4, 2023, 7:38:08 PM - WASInjured Brian Robinson Jr., Antonio Gibson Not At Practice
Washington Commanders running backs Brian Robinson Jr. (undisclosed) and Antonio Gibson (ankle, knee) were not seen at practice on Wednesday. It's unknown what Robinson is dealing with, but Gibson missed the Week 17 loss to the Cleveland Browns with ankle and knee ailments. Robinson played 52 percent of the offensive snaps last Sunday and had 24 carries for 87 yards, so he might just be getting a day of rest leading up to the season finale this weekend against the Dallas Cowboys. Still, this is a situation worth watching, as Jonathan Williams could be Washington's lead back to close out the year if the Commanders decide to rest both Robinson and Gibson after getting eliminated from postseason contention in Week 17.
