- HOUTexans Interview Jonathan Gannon
The Houston Texans announced on Saturday that they had completed an interview with Jonathan Gannon for the team's open head-coaching position. Gannon is currently the defensive coordinator for the Philadelphia Eagles, but his NFL coaching experience dates back to 2007. The 40-year-old could replace Lovie Smith in Houston after the experienced head coach was fired earlier this week. The Texans hold the second overall pick in the upcoming NFL draft and will be looking to rebound from a 3-13-1 season in the 2023-2024 campaign.

Houston Texans wide receiver John Metchie III is making "amazing" progress in his recovery from Leukemia, according to Texans general manager Nick Caserio. This is excellent news for the 22-year-old, who was diagnosed with Acute Promyelocytic Leukemia last summer and missed the entirety of his rookie season. Caserio also stated on Wednesday that there is a chance Metchie will participate in the team's offseason program starting in April. Metchie could be a name to monitor heading into the 2023-2024 campaign as Houston is expected to overhaul much of its offense and may trade receiver Brandin Cooks in the process.

Houston Texans rookie running back Dameon Pierce (ankle) is making a speedy recovery from a high-ankle sprain that he suffered late in an impressive rookie season. Pierce was the most dangerous weapon in a lackluster Texans offense this year and has a bright future ahead of him after finishing with 939 rushing yards and four touchdowns despite missing the final four games. He accumulated 1,026 total scrimmage yards. The fourth-rounder finished second among all rookie RBs in rushing yards behind Kenneth Walker III, and he ranked third all-time for a rookie in rushing yards in franchise history. The 22-year-old is both powerful and elusive and will be an attractive fantasy RB heading into his second NFL season. Whoever Houston hires as their next head coach will likely lean heavily on Pierce and the ground game in 2023.

Houston Texans wide receiver Brandin Cooks reiterated that he still wants out of Houston before next season. The 29-year-old was disgruntled earlier this year, requesting a trade to another team, which ultimately did not happen. He only played in 13 games, finishing with fewer than 1,000 receiving yards for the second time in his career. In addition to his age, any club that acquires him will inherit the two-year contract he signed. It will be interesting to monitor and see whether he finds a new home this offseason.

Houston Texans head coach Lovie Smith has been fired by the organization after his first season with the team. It's not a good look for the Texans to go through two head coaches this quickly. The veteran coach went 3-13-1 with one of the worst rosters in the NFL. There some rumors he'd be let go before the Week 18 matchup with the Indianapolis Colts. A game in which the Texans won, which knocked them out of the No. 1 pick in the upcoming draft. It's likely that Smith was going to be fired regardless, but at least he went out with a win. Best of luck to the next person that gets the head coaching gig this offseason.

Houston Texans tight end O.J. Howard (hip), who was listed as questionable for Sunday against the Indianapolis Colts, has officially been ruled out for the regular season finale. It's a bit surprising that he's not active after returning to a full practice on Friday, but the Texans have decided to keep him out in a meaningless game. The 28-year-old finishes his first year in Houston with a career-low 10 receptions on 23 targets for 145 yards and two touchdowns in 13 games played (10 starts). With Howard out, Jordan Akins and Brevin Jordan will split the pass-catching duties at the position for the Texans, but neither of them are particularly attractive streaming options in fantasy at the position as the Texans play out the string.

Houston Texans head coach Lovie Smith could be one-and-done with the organization. His job status is reportedly up in the air heading into Week 18. To be fair, Smith was a bit of a panic hire after the Texans fired David Culley after his surprising 2021 campaign. The only thing going for this team right now is that they are currently in the lead for the No. 1 pick in the upcoming NFL Draft. Smith probably isn't the right man for the job long term, but that doesn't mean he should be fired after one season. Currently, the Texans have two wins with arguably the worst roster in the NFL. In fairness, Smith's coaching record is pretty awful since leaving the Chicago Bears. It appears the organization is going to evaluate Smith after the season.

Houston Texans wide receiver Phillip Dorsett (hamstring) won't play on Sunday against the Colts. The veteran caught three of his season-high six targets in the loss to Jacksonville in Week 17 to finish with 14 yards. However, considering underwhelming performances like that have been the norm for Dorsett this season, it's unlikely many fantasy managers will miss him in Week 18.

The Houston Texans will evaluate head coach Lovie Smith after the 2022 season ends, according to NFL.com's Ian Rapoport and Tom Pelissero. The team remains undecided on Smith's future and will use a holistic approach when making a decision on his job status. While it seems like Smith, who is still in his first season with the Texans, was thrown into a messy situation and deserves another season with an improved roster, it's worth noting that the Texans moved on from first-year head coach David Culley last season. Rapoport and Pelissero also noted that "staff changes are possible" even if Smith is retained for 2023.

Houston Texans running back Dare Ogunbowale (knee) is officially active for Week 17 against the Jacksonville Jaguars. He had been listed as questionable after practicing in a limited capacity. Ogunbowale has yet to see a sizable workload despite the absence of rookie Dameon Pierce (ankle). The former has 16 rushes for just 42 yards over his last two games and should be avoided in most leagues this week.
