- COLBrendan Rodgers To Make $2.7 Million In 2023
The Colorado Rockies and second baseman Brendan Rodgers avoided salary arbitration on Friday by agreeing to a one-year, $2.7 million deal. In his fourth year in the big leagues with the Rockies in 2022, Rodgers slashed .266/.325/.408 with a .733 OPS, 13 home runs, 63 RBI and 72 runs scored in 581 plate appearances and a career-high 137 games. He hasn't been much to look at from a fantasy perspective with only 28 home runs, 123 RBI and no stolen bases in four seasons at Coors Field, but offers the Rockies great defense at the keystone and could develop more power along the way. Rodgers remains a decent selection as a middle infielder in deep mixed leagues in 2023.

The Colorado Rockies avoided salary arbitration with left-hander Austin Gomber on Wednesday by agreeing to a one-year, $1.65 million deal, according to sources familiar with the deal. Gomber was a key piece in the blockbuster trade that sent third baseman Nolan Arenado to the St. Louis Cardinals. The 29-year-old southpaw appeared in a career-high 33 games (17 starts) in his second season in Colorado in 2022 and went 5-7 with a career-high 5.56 ERA (4.54 FIP), 1.37 WHIP and career-low 18.0% strikeout rate in 124 1/3 innings pitched. Depending on how he fares in spring training, Gomber could be a candidate to start the regular season in Colorado's starting rotation, but he'd be a pretty shaky streamer in deep leagues.

According to a tweet from The New York Post's Jon Heyman on Monday, the Colorado Rockies have reportedly signed left-handed relief pitcher Fernando Abad to a minor-league contract. Heyman tweeted the following on Monday morning: "Rockies sign LHP Fernando Abad to a minor league contract with a non roster invite to big league camp." The veteran relief pitcher has made an even 400 appearances at the Major League level. All told, he's logged a 3.77 ERA and a 4.22 FIP in 348.1 career innings of work. He pitched in 16 games for the Baltimore Orioles in 2021, throwing 17.2 innings for the American League East club while registering a 5.60 ERA and a 3.96 FIP. Most recently, Abad threw 43 innings for the Seattle Mariners Triple-A affiliate in 2022, pitching to a 3.56 ERA, a 4.79 FIP, 32 strikeouts, and 12 walks.

The Colorado Rockies announced on Friday that they claimed right-hander Nick Mears off waivers from the Texas Rangers. With the addition, the Rockies' 40-man roster now sits at 39 players. All three of Mears' major-league seasons in the last three years have come with the Pittsburgh Pirates. He only tossed two scoreless innings for the Bucs in 2022 and has allowed 17 runs (16 earned) on 30 hits while walking 21 and striking out 32 in 30 1/3 relief innings in his three campaigns. The 26-year-old had a 4.80 ERA and 1.40 WHIP down on the farm in 2022, so he'll really need to impress the Rockies coaching staff in spring training in order to get a shot in the Opening Day bullpen in Colorado.

The Colorado Rockies are optimistic that third baseman/outfielder Kris Bryant (foot) will be ready for spring training after he was limited to 42 games in 2022 due to plantar fasciitis. "Our trainers and strength guys have checked in with him and from everything I'm being told he looks good. We are optimistic about him showing up (healthy) at spring training," general manager Bill Schmidt said. When Bryant was on the field in his first year in Colorado, he hit well, slashing .306/.376/.475 with five home runs in 181 plate appearances. The 30-year-old is no longer in his prime, but he resides in the best hitting environment in baseball and could easily bounce back as a value pick in fantasy drafts if he's able to stay healthy in 2023. We'll be monitoring his status closely as spring training nears.
Source : RotoBallerUpdated : Jan 1, 2023, 7:38:06 PM - COLRockies Reach Deal With Pierce Johnson
The Colorado Rockies agreed to a one-year, $5 million deal with right-hander Pierce Johnson on Tuesday. Johnson will help bolster the team's right-handed relief corps. The 31-year-old went to high school in Colorado before going to Missouri State and becoming a first-round selection by the Cubs in 2012. He posted a 5.02 ERA with 21 strikeouts and eight walks in 14 1/3 relief innings for the San Diego Padres. Johnson was out from late April until September due to right-elbow tendonitis. In five big-league seasons, he has gone 10-9 with a 4.05 ERA in 140 appearances. Johnson held a key role with the Friars in 2020 and 2021, going 6-5 with a 3.09 ERA, 104 K's and 36 walks in 78 2/3 frames. He won't have much fantasy value, if any, in most leagues.

The Colorado Rockies agreed with free-agent right-hander T.J. Zeuch on a minor-league deal on Friday, according to a source. Zeuch was a former top prospect with the Toronto Blue Jays, and he'll receive an invite to big-league spring training. The 27-year-old was with the Cincinnati Reds in 2022, but he was cut in September after allowing a whopping 18 earned runs on 24 hits while walking seven and striking out five in just 10 2/3 innings over three starts at the major-league level. A back injury likely contributed to his poor performance in a small sample size. The 6-foot-7 pitcher has made only 16 appearances (10 starts) in four major-league seasons, posting a bloated 6.49 ERA (6.73 FIP), a 1.79 WHIP, 36 strikeouts and 31 walks in 59 2/3 innings pitched.

The Colorado Rockies are optimistic that third baseman/outfielder Kris Bryant (foot) will arrive at spring training next year healthy after he was limited to 42 games in 2022 due to injuries. "Our trainers and strength guys have checked in with him and from everything I'm being told he looks good. We are optimistic about him showing up (healthy) at spring training," general manager Bill Schmidt said. Bryant dealt with plantar fasciitis for much of the year after inking a seven-year, $182 million deal with the organization last March. But when he was on the field, he hit a strong .306/.376/.475 with five home runs in 181 plate appearances, giving the Rockies and fantasy managers hope that there's still plenty of juice left. Time will tell if he can stay healthy in 2023, but if he can, he could be a bargain in fantasy drafts.

The Colorado Rockies avoided salary arbitration with right-hander Dinelson Lamet on Wednesday by agreeing to an undisclosed one-year deal. Lamet began the 2022 season with the San Diego Padres before being traded to the Milwaukee Brewers. The Rockies then claimed him off waivers from the Brewers in August. The 30-year-old pitched to a 4.05 ERA (3.46 FIP), a 1.20 WHIP, 29 strikeouts and 10 walks in 20 relief innings for Colorado to close out the year. The Padres traded him after he allowed 14 runs (13 earned) on 16 hits while walking nine and striking out 16 in 12 1/3 relief innings to begin the season. Lamet began his MLB career as a starter, but injuries have relegated him to relief duties in recent seasons.

The Colorado Rockies acquired infielder Nolan Jones from the Cleveland Guardians on Tuesday in exchange for infielder Juan Brito. Jones was a former second-round pick and is listed as Cleveland's No. 7 prospect, per MLB Pipeline. The 24-year-old has had some of the best walk rates in the minors over the last couple seasons, and he finished the season at Triple-A Columbus by hitting .276 with nine home runs, 43 RBI, 44 runs, four stolen bases and 31 walks in 55 games. In his first 28 games at the big-league level, Jones hit .244 (21-for-86) with two homers, 13 RBI and 10 runs scored. The left-handed hitter has a chance to play a lot at the hot corner in Colorado in 2023. Brito, meanwhile, was listed as the Rockies' No. 30 prospect. The 21-year-old switch-hitter batted .286 with 11 home runs, 72 RBI, 91 runs and 17 stolen bases in 107 games for Single-A Fresno this year.
