- STLDakota Hudson Settles For $2.65 Million
The St. Louis Cardinals and starting pitcher Dakota Hudson avoided salary arbitration by agreeing to a one-year, $2.65 million deal on Friday. It wasn't a great year for Hudson in 2022. In his return from Tommy John surgery, he recorded a career-high 4.45 ERA (4.34 FIP), 1.45 WHIP and career-low 13.1 percent strikeout rate in 139 2/3 innings over 27 appearances (26 starts). Heading into his sixth season with the Cardinals, Hudson is in line to open the 2023 campaign in the bullpen, limiting his fantasy appeal in deeper formats. He should eventually see some time in the rotation, but he's gone over 139 innings just one in his career and will have limited fantasy upside.
Source : RotoBallerUpdated : Jan 13, 2023, 11:28:59 PM - STLCardinals, Jordan Montgomery Settle At $10 Million
The St. Louis Cardinals and left-hander Jordan Montgomery avoided salary arbitration on Friday by agreeing to a one-year, $10 million deal, according to a source. Montgomery came to St. Louis at last year's trade deadline from the New York Yankees. He had a combined 9-6 record with a 3.48 ERA (3.61 FIP), 1.09 WHIP and 21.8 percent strikeout rate in 178 1/3 innings over 32 starts. The 30-year-old southpaw figures to be a key piece in St. Louis' rotation moving forward, and he'll have more fantasy appeal pitching in the National League Central division instead of the brutal American League East. Montgomery went 6-3 with a 3.11 ERA and 1.08 WHIP in his 11 starts for the Red Birds to close out 2022.

The St. Louis Cardinals and catcher Willson Contreras agreed to a five-year, $87.5 million deal on Wednesday, according to a source familiar with the deal. There were reports earlier on Wednesday that the two sides were closing in on a deal, and now it's official as the Cardinals find their replacement for the retired Yadier Molina. Contreras was the top offensive catcher on the open market this offseason, and he'll give an already strong Cardinals lineup an added boost at the catcher position. The 30-year-old three-time All-Star hit .243/.349/.466 with an .815 OPS, 22 home runs, 55 RBI, 65 runs scored and four stolen bases in 113 games in 2022 with the Cubs. Contreras has a .256/.349/.459 slash line with an .808 OPS in seven big-league seasons. Moving to St. Louis will make him even more attractive as a high-end fantasy catcher.

St. Louis Cardinals first baseman Paul Goldschmidt was named the 2022 National League Most Valuable Player, his first career MVP award. He's also the first Cardinal to win the award since Albert Pujols did so in 2009. Goldy had the best season of his career at 34 years old and led the NL in slugging percentage (.578) while leading all of baseball in OPS (.981) and weighted runs created plus (177). He managed to beat out teammate Nolan Arenado and San Diego Padres third baseman Manny Machado for the hardware. Goldschmidt's final slash line sat at .317/.404/.578, and he added 35 home runs, 115 RBI, 106 runs scored and seven stolen bases in his 561 at-bats. Despite being 35 heading into the 2023 season, Goldschmidt will remain an elite fantasy first baseman.

The St. Louis Cardinals agreed to a one-year contract with free-agent right-hander Chris Stratton on Thursday. The deal is reportedly for $2.8 million. Stratton began the 2022 season with the Pittsburgh Pirates but was eventually acquired by the Cardinals in a trade. In his 20 relief appearances with St. Louis, he had a nice 2.78 ERA (2.80 FIP), a 1.50 WHIP, 23 strikeouts and 12 walks in 22 2/3 innings. In total, the 32-year-old posted a 4.26 ERA (3.32 FIP), a 1.53 WHIP, two saves and a 60:25 K:BB in 63 1/3 innings pitched over 60 appearances (one start). Stratton will only become attractive in fantasy if he makes any spot starts for the Red Birds.

The St. Louis Cardinals added left-hander Connor Thomas to their 40-man major-league roster on Tuesday to protect him from this week's Rule 5 draft. Thomas checks in as the team's No. 24 prospect, per MLB Pipeline, but he doesn't have a ton of upside at the next level. The 24-year-old southpaw struck out only 110 hitters in 135 innings over 28 outings (25 starts) for Triple-A Memphis this year while also posting a 5.47 ERA and 1.57 WHIP. Thomas projects as more of a back-end starter in St. Louis or as a long-relief swing man once he eventually makes it to the majors, which could come in 2023.

St. Louis Cardinals third baseman Nolan Arenado won his 10th career Gold Glove in 10 major-league seasons on Tuesday, which ties Ichiro Suzuki for most consecutive Gold Gloves to begin a career. Arenado trails only Brooks Robinson (16) for all-time Gold Gloves by a third baseman. The rest of the National League winners included Phillies catcher J.T. Realmuto, Diamondbacks first baseman Christian Walker, Rockies second baseman Brendan Rodgers, Braves shortstop Dansby Swanson, Cubs left fielder Ian Happ, Padres center fielder Trent Grisham, Dodgers right fielder Mookie Betts and Braves starting pitcher Max Fried.

St. Louis Cardinals third baseman Nolan Arenado has informed the team that he will opt into the remainder of his five-year, $144 million contract, according to a league source. Arenado was facing his second and final opt-out clause in the deal, and the Cardinals were optimistic throughout the 2022 season that the seven-time All-Star would choose to return. Since he was acquired by the Cardinals in a trade before the 2021 season, Arenado has made two All-Star teams and is in the running for his 10th straight Gold Glove. The 31-year-old slugger also has two straight seasons of 30-plus homers and 100 RBI and could also win his fifth Silver Slugger award. Arenado will remain a high-end fantasy third baseman heading into the 2023 season.

The St. Louis Cardinals re-signed right-hander Adam Wainwright to a one-year, $17.5 million deal on Friday. The 41-year-old veteran will have $10 million deferred and will make an extra $500,000 each for 28 and 30 starts, plus other awards/bonuses. The 2023 season could very well be Wainwright's last in the big leagues. He was decent for the Red Birds in 2022, going 11-12 with a 3.71 ERA (3.66 FIP), a 1.28 WHIP, 143 strikeouts and 54 walks in 191 2/3 innings over his 32 starts. Considering his age and the poor finish to his season, Wainwright probably won't be much more than an innings-eater for fantasy managers in deeper leagues.

According to a tweet from the St. Louis Post-Dispatch's Derrick Goold on Wednesday, veteran starting pitcher Adam Wainwright will reportedly be back next season on the team. The veteran enjoyed another strong season for St. Louis, pitching to a 3.71 ERA, a 3.66 FIP, 143 strikeouts and 54 walks. The Cardinals' other rotation options include the likes of Miles Mikolas, Jordan Montgomery, Jack Flaherty, Dakota Hudson, Steven Matz, and Adrian Pallante.
