- NYYKyle Higashioka Gets $1.46 Million To Avoid Arbitration
The New York Yankees and catcher Kyle Higashioka agreed to a one-year, $1.46 million deal to avoid salary arbitration. The 32-year-old has one more year of arbitration before entering free agency. His workload may have been reduced when the Yankees acquired Jose Trevino, but Higashioka will still get considerable reps behind the plate. This past season, he made 248 plate appearances and molded a .227/.264/.389 slash line and matched his career-high 10 HRs. The veteran may not be the most efficient player at the plate. However, his defensive attributes allow him to keep his job. He ranked in the 71st percentile for framing in 2022, which is quite impressive for a backup catcher. Although, his fantasy value is likely insignificant with Trevino as the Yankees' primary catcher.

Catcher Jose Trevino and the New York Yankees agreed to a one-year, $2.36 million deal to avoid salary arbitration. Trevino serves as the starting catcher in the Bronx, with Kyle Higashioka serving as the backup. Trevino was named to his first all-star game in 2022 after displaying an impressive bat and immaculate defense. He slashed .248/.283/.388 with a .671 OPS and 11 HRs. The 30-year-old was most productive with runners in scoring position and amassed a .901 OPS with a 159 wRC+. Trevino was additionally awarded the Gold Glove award, which is only the beginning of his hardware display. The Texas native continues to impress the Yankees' management and is vying for some more reps behind the plate in 2023.

The New York Yankees and right-hander Michael King avoided arbitration after agreeing to a one-year, $1.3 million deal. King is recovering from a fractured elbow back in July and hopes to return in 2023. He is lauded as one of the biggest weapons out of the Yankees bullpen, and his return is quite impactful for the club. Before suffering a fractured elbow, King made 34 bullpen appearances and posted a 2.29 ERA with 66 strikeouts and a 2.23 FIP. He maintained a career-high 33.2% strikeout rate while holding opponents to a .191 average. Assuming that the 27-year-old is ready for 2023, the Yankees expect King to pick up where he left off. King will make an impact in the fantasy world, especially in league formats that account for holds.

Right-handed reliever Jonathan Loaisiga and the New York Yankees settled on a one-year, $2.3 million deal to avoid salary arbitration. The 28-year-old is a crucial component of the Yankees bullpen and is expected to make a similar impact in 2023. The right-hander was less effective than the Yankees had hoped in 2022, but he suffered a shoulder injury at the beginning of the season. His 4.13 ERA was nearly double his 2.17 ERA in 2022, but Loaisiga will get his chance to re-establish himself. He made 50 appearances this past season and yielded a career-high 22 earned runs. The right-hander hopes to reinvigorate his fiery approach toward the game and play a vital role in the Yankees' bullpen this coming season.

New York Yankees right-hander Frankie Montas (shoulder) is expected to miss the first month of the regular season in 2023 due to shoulder inflammation that he dealt with at the end of 2022, according to sources. Montas is eight to 10 weeks behind in his offseason training. The 29-year-old missed two weeks with the Oakland Athletics last year and then landed on the injured list on Sept. 20 with the Yankees after eight lackluster outings in pinstripes. The Yanks sent left-handers JP Sears and Ken Waldichuk, along with two minor-leaguers, to acquire Montas and reliever Lou Trivino from the A's at last year's trade deadline. Montas had a 6.35 ERA in 39 2/3 innings in his eight starts for New York in 2022, but they're hoping he'll be an important part of their rotation in 2023 once he returns from his shoulder issues.

The New York Yankees and left-handed starting pitcher Nestor Cortes agreed to a one-year, $3.2 million deal to avoid salary arbitration on Friday. The 28-year-old Cuban southpaw made the All-Star team for the first time in 2022 in his fifth major-league season and second with the Yanks. He went 12-4 with a career-best 2.44 ERA (3.12 FIP), 0.92 WHIP, career-high 163 strikeouts and 38 walks in 158 1/3 frames over his 28 starts. Cortes suffered a left groin injury while pitching in the American League Championship Series, but he should be fine for the start of 2023. Fantasy managers should consider him a fringe top-30 fantasy starter.

The New York Yankees agreed to a one-year, $3.3 million deal with relief pitcher Clay Holmes on Friday to avoid salary arbitration. Holmes will make an extra $25,000 each for 25, 30, 35 and 40 games finished in 2023. In his first full season with the Yankees, the 29-year-old right-hander picked up a career-high 20 saves -- he didn't have a single save coming into the season -- and also finished with a career-best 2.54 ERA (2.84 FIP), 1.02 WHIP and 65 strikeouts in 63 2/3 relief innings. He dealt with a strained right shoulder late last year, but he should be fine for spring training and is expected to open the 2023 season as the team's primary closer. Holmes isn't elite by any means and will have to continue pitching well to keep the gig, but he should be considered a top-20 fantasy reliever.

The New York Yankees and left-handed reliever Wandy Peralta avoided salary arbitration on Friday by agreeing to a one-year, $3.35 million deal. The 31-year-old Dominican southpaw was very sharp out of the bullpen in his second season in the Bronx, posting a career-best 2.72 ERA (2.86 FIP), 1.05 WHIP, four saves and 21.1 percent strikeout rate in 56 1/3 relief innings. Peralta was very useful for the Yankees in relief last year, but he doesn't project to carry much fantasy value in middle relief for the 2023 campaign. In his seven big-league seasons, he has a 4.07 ERA (4.40 FIP), 1.38 WHIP, nine saves and 240 strikeouts in 291 2/3 career innings over 322 outings (one start).

The New York Yankees agreed to a one-year, $7.5 million deal with starting pitcher Frankie Montas to avoid salary arbitration on Friday. The Yankees acquired Montas at the trade deadline from the Oakland Athletics last August to beef up their rotation, but the only made eight starts in pinstripes and dealt with a right shoulder issue. He had an ERA over 6.00 in the Bronx and finished 2022 with a combined 5-12 record, 4.05 ERA (3.78 FIP), 1.25 WHIP and 23.4 percent strikeout rate in 144 1/3 innings over 27 starts. With better health in 2023, the 29-year-old right-hander could bounce back for the Yankees and fantasy managers, but it will admittedly be much tougher pitching in Yankee Stadium and the tough American League East for a full season.

The New York Yankees signed free-agent outfielder Rafael Ortega to a minor-league deal on Tuesday. The deal likely includes an invitation to major-league spring training. Ortega joins Willie Calhoun and Billy McKinney as outfield reclamation projects for the Yankees entering spring training in 2023. It's possible that one of Ortega, Calhoun and McKinney could open the season with considerable playing time in left field to begin the year if they impress in spring training. Ortega made his major-league debut in 2012 with the Colorado Rockies and has played in six seasons, hitting .250/.322/.361 with a .683 OPS, 21 home runs, 101 RBI, 120 runs scored and 41 stolen bases in 364 games. Last year in a career-high 118 games with the Chicago Cubs, he hit .241/.331/.358 with seven home runs, 35 RBI, 35 runs and 12 stolen bases in 371 plate appearances.
