Patriots Let The Steelers Leap Them To Draft Broderick Jones, Jets Released A Video Showing Their Awareness

Broderick Jones, a Georgia offensive lineman, was generally thought to be a first-round target for the tackle-needy Jets before New England moved from choice No. 14 to pick No. 17, allowing the Pittsburgh Steelers to jump ahead of New York and choose at No. 15.

Although general manager Joe Douglas wasn’t caught off guard by the Patriots’ deal, a behind-the-scenes video from the Jets’ draft room showed Jones was on their radar as their pick got closer.

Douglas really predicted the trade, the partner, and the player in the team’s video.

Patriots Let The Steelers Leap Them To Draft Broderick Jones, Jets Released A Video Showing Their Awareness

Joe Douglas, the general manager of the New York Jets, is asked to rate three prospects who the Jets evidently favored ahead of their first-round pick. Douglas says

1. Edge rusher Will McDonald IV

2. Tight end Matthew Mayer

3. Tackle Broderick Jones

The Jets general manager makes a trade prediction later.

Douglas guessed that someone would move up ahead of us to get Broderick Jones from New England. “Pittsburgh.”

That’s exactly what occurred, of course.

Following the summer deal for Aaron Rodgers, the offensive line became clear as a position the Jets needed to strengthen before the 2023 NFL Draft.

They ended up selecting Pittsburgh offensive lineman Carter Warren in the fourth round and Wisconsin center Joe Tippmann in the second round, but everything revolved around the Jets when the Patriots and Steelers traded first-round picks and Pittsburgh gave up a 2023 fourth-round pick.

“Bill will try to screw them over any chance he gets,” an anonymous NFL personnel executive told The Washington Post. “He knew exactly what he was doing.”

It is understandable why the Jets would want these films to be made public. They demonstrate that Pittsburgh’s move to sign Jones didn’t catch Douglas and company off guard, and that, at least based on the audio in the video above, the Patriots’ transaction didn’t really prevent them from signing their top target.

And no animosity appeared to exist between the two AFC East opponents. Two days later, they joined up again for a trade, with the Jets giving the Patriots the 112th overall pick so they could choose kicker Chad Ryland. In exchange, New York received choices 120 and 184.
