Mets’ Manager Buck Showalter Asks His Team To Play Better If Annoyed With Cubs’ Marcus Stroman’s Antics

After forcing Francisco Alvarez to hit into a double play to conclude the eighth inning on Wednesday at Wrigley Field, Cubs starter Marcus Stroman banged his chest and yelled towards the opposing dugout. The Mets & Showalter were disappointed with Stroman’s outburst of joy following their 4-2 loss.

“It pretty much doesn’t surprise anybody, right?” Showalter said of Stroman’s celebration. “It’s kind of his M.O., right? If you don’t like it, do something about it. Play better.”

After pitching for the Mets the previous year, Stroman signed with the Cubs before the start of this one, and he won after eight innings with two runs allowed.

He yelled into the Mets’ dugout before turning away from the mound.

One Mets player who witnessed the scene later told The Post: “Show some respect. Be a professional. It isn’t all about you.”

After the 2021 season, the Mets let Stroman become a free agent. He then signed a three-year, $71 million deal with the Cubs.

On Wednesday night, Marcus Stroman dominated the Mets and made sure to let them know it.

The 32-year-old earned a victory for the Cubs (22-26) by tossing eight innings of two-run ball against his former team. The Mets (25-25) had no answers for his sinker, and other than giving up a two-run blast to Francisco Alvarez, New York was forced to ground out 15 times as a result of the defeat.

Stroman’s start on Wednesday was maybe his finest of the year. Despite being his longest performance of the year, it was the first time he pitched longer than 6.1 innings and equaled his season-low in pitches (88). After the game, when asked how it felt to start against his former team, Stroman played it down.

“I really don’t play into it too much, to be honest with you,” Stroman said. “Younger me may have seen it as a revenge game but now I know how to pitch, I’m very good at what I do, it’s just a matter of getting to a point mechanically and rolling start after start and staying there.”
