Patrick Mahomes Continues Turning Double-Digit Deficits Into Wins as He Reaches Major NFL Milestone

The Kansas City Chiefs required an early deficit in order to get going. In Sunday’s 44-23 victory over the San Francisco 49ers, Patrick Mahomes passed for 423 yards and three touchdowns to help Kansas City overcome another double-digit deficit. In this Super Bowl rematch, Mahomes got things off to a rocky start with an early interception that placed Kansas City (5-2) in a 10-0 deficit, but it was again of no consequence as he guided the Chiefs to touchdowns on six of their next seven possessions.

These days, a double-digit lead over Patrick Mahomes and the Kansas City Chiefs may be the most perilous lead in the NFL. When Kansas City was behind by at least 10 points, Mahomes led a comeback that improved the team’s record to 13-9. The most notable of these comebacks occurred in the 2019 Super Bowl victory over the 49ers (3-4) after the regular season.

Patrick Mahomes steers comeback from a double-digit deficit for 12th time

On Sunday, after falling behind 10-0 in the first quarter against the San Francisco 49ers, the Chiefs recovered for a 44-23 victory, marking Mahomes’ 12th comeback from a deficit of at least 10 points in the previous four seasons.

After falling behind by at least 10 points, the Chiefs have won 12 of their last 17 games with Mahomes at the helm, including all three of their postseason contests.

When he won on Sunday for the 55th time, Patrick Mahomes tied Hall of Famer Ken Stabler for the most victories by a quarterback in their first 70 starts during the Super Bowl era. With 56 more, Otto Graham is the only quarterback ahead of them in NFL history.

After confronting an early disadvantage as they did against the Niners, Kansas City is just as likely to win by double digits as they are to lose.
