‘I just play Chess on my phone’ – Mavericks talisman Luka Doncic reveals he avoids social media for chess
Luka Doncic is a once-in-a-generation talent. The Dallas Mavericks guard is a three-time All-Star and is currently among the leading scorers in the NBA this season. However, despite his incredible start to the campaign, he is still criticized by some on social media.
In a recent press conference, the Slovenian was asked by a reporter whether he is fazed by criticism online but his answer surprised many. Doncic revealed that when he often has his phone in his hand, he is playing chess rather than scrolling through Twitter. He said, “I just play Chess online most of the time.”
A reporter asked Luka Doncic if he’d been paying attention to any of the changes on Twitter.

Doncic was then asked whether he plays most of his chess on his phone or laptop. The Mavericks star responded: “I play online. But I win, mostly.”
Luka’s answer also got the attention of reigning World Chess Champion Magnus Carlsen and former World Champion Garry Kasparov. Carlsen tweeted ‘That’s my guy’ while Kasparov reacted with an interesting emoji.

Luka Doncic enjoys playing chess in his spare time
However, this isn’t the first time that Doncic has shown his affinity for chess. Back in 2021, he was asked how he prefers to dissect a defense, he told reporters, “It’s like playing chess: you’ve got to take your time and see the moves.”
Even in 2020, when the NBA moved to the bio-bubble in Orlando, Florida, Doncic was seen playing chess on his phone while most of his teammates were enjoying themselves in the pool.
Doncic and the Mavericks have had a strong start to the season once again and will surely be in the hunt for glory this season. Last term, the Mavs reached the Western Conference finals but fell to the Golden State Warriors. Doncic and company will now look to push further for the NBA championship this season.
