Eli Manning pokes fun at Russell Wilson’s Contract On “ManningCast”

Eli Manning, a former Giants quarterback, is one of these detractors, as evidenced by his jab at Wilson during Monday Night Football’s “Manningcast.”

In Week 3, the Broncos barely defeated the 49ers on Sunday Night Football, but under new quarterback Russell Wilson, Denver’s offence once again stalled out frequently and early.

Many football fans and journalists are debating whether Wilson was deserving of the expensive contract deal he recently signed with Denver as the Broncos struggle to move past neutral on the offensive side of the ball.

The Broncos punted a remarkable eleven times in their victory over San Francisco on Sunday, and Manning believes punter Corliss Waitman would have been a better choice with Wilson’s sizable paycheck.

“They should have paid that punter $235 million instead of Russell,” Manning quipped.

“Pay that man his money!” replied guest Pat McAfee

Wilson hasn’t exactly been on fire for his new squad or new head coach, Nathaniel Hackett, albeit it’s still early. The Broncos are currently 30th in the league, with 43 points scored in three games this year.

The Broncos spent a lot of money on Wilson throughout the offseason, including trade capital and a contract. In exchange for Wilson, Denver gave the Seahawks two first-round picks, a third-round pick, Drew Lock, and other items. Later, they gave him a five-year deal worth $245 million, with $165 million in guaranteed compensation.

For example, punter Corliss Waitman makes $825,000 annually and averages 47.5 yards per punt on Sunday.

Wilson put in another poor effort, following the Broncos’ struggles to recover against the Texans in Week 2. When Wilson returned to Seattle in Week 1, he performed better, throwing for 340 yards and a score despite the offence’s struggles in the end zone.

The contract was criticized at the time for being team-friendly, despite Manning’s crack and the reality that Wilson’s extension would likely represent life-changing money for the majority of people. Wilson was criticized by an NFL agent for being a “businessman” and for allegedly “getting something behind the scenes” in exchange for “performing favours for the establishment.”
