Charles Barkley has already penned out a to-do list if he ever becomes NBA Commissioner

When it comes to its worldwide appeal, the NBA has gone a long way. While celebrities like Magic Johnson, Larry Bird, and Michael Jordan are frequently credited for the same, David Stern is one individual in particular who doesn’t receive the respect he merits. The past commissioner significantly contributed to the National Basketball Association’s current level of success. Charles Barkley, though, had a few more changes from his playing days that he would implement if he were to take over as commissioner for the day.

When asked what would be on his to-do list if he were the league’s commissioner in a 1992 interview with NBA on TNT, Barkley was speaking with Ernie Johnson. The former Sixers legend had proposed “mandated drug testing” among other things.

“I’d bring basketball back to the inner city”: Barkley, Charles

The 1993 MVP explained the rationale behind “mandated drug testing” by arguing that drug use is incompatible with success. According to “The Round Mound of Rebound,”Well, I’ve always thought that drug testing should be required. I believe that drug testing should be required for all positions since consuming drugs while working is not productive.”

Players can be subjected to random drug tests both during the regular season and the summer in the modern league. Deandre Ayton, John Collins, Tyreke Evans, and many others have recently been subjected to hefty suspensions and penalties as a consequence of drug testing.

It should go without saying that Barkley will be pleased with this drug testing strategy.

Sir Charles also highlighted another thing he would want to accomplish in his capacity as commissioner. The 29-year-old at the time had stated:

“I would likely bring basketball back to the inner city as the second thing I would do. We need to bring basketball back to its roots in the inner city and the ghetto since it has evolved into a high-profile, affluent sport. I mean, that’s basically how the game started, and those are the people it should be for.” he concluded.
