Andy Reid: When I Came Here, I Was Told Nick Sirianni Is Really A Special Coach

After spending 14 years as the Eagles’ head coach, Andy Reid took the helm of the Chiefs little over ten years ago.

And as Reid assembled his first team in Kansas City, he let go of Nick Sirianni, a young, promising assistant.

Since 2009, Sirianni has worked for the Chiefs, first as an offensive quality control coach. In 2012, Romeo Crennel, the head coach at the time, elevated him to receivers coach.

In Super Bowl LVII, the two will now face off on opposing sides as head coaches. Over the next two weeks, a lot of ink will undoubtedly be spilled on Reid’s relationship with the Eagles and Philadelphia, but Kansas City’s head coach was questioned about his memories of the decision to let Sirianni go back in January 2013.

It is one of the more interesting storylines of the upcoming Super Bowl that is already getting a lot of attention. Reid was asked about coaching against his former team and had nothing but good things to say.

Reid will compete not just against the group that made the decision not to keep him, but also against Nick Sirianni, the team’s coach.

The head coach, who is 41 years old and in his second season, started coaching in 2004. Before joining the Chiefs as an offensive quality control coach in 2009, he had stopped at Mount Union and Indiana University of Pennsylvania.

In 2012, Sirianni received a promotion to wide receivers coach from then-head coach Romeo Crennel. The latter’s job security was uncertain because the former was let go at the end of the season.

In January 2013, Reid took over for Crennel and decided not to keep Sirianni. About ten years ago, a decision was taken, and now it has come full circle.

As for his decision to let Sirianni go, Reid explained why he did not keep him on staff-

“When I came here, I was told Nick Sirianni — this guy is really a special coach. Really, a good football coach. But I had David [Culley]. David was my assistant head coach and he’d been with me for 14 years and so he was coming with me. And I had to make that determination to keep Nick or not.

And I knew being as good as he was and the reputation he had, I knew he was going to get something. So, it’s worked out great for him.”

Either way, it has worked out well for them both.
