‘Age is just a number’ – NBA fans react as LeBron James drops 42 points on return to Drew League

LeBron James, the star of the Lakers, was expected to perform in the renowned Drew League in South Los Angeles, so lines started to develop outside King/Drew Magnet High at 7 a.m. on Saturday. James wasn’t due to play until 1:45 p.m., but anticipation for his appearance in one of the nation’s top pro-am leagues was obvious long before he even stepped foot on the court in the standing-room-only gym that was jam-packed with fans from 11 a.m. on.

A left ankle strain caused him to miss seven of the Lakers’ final eight regular-season games in the spring, and he missed 26 games overall in 2021–22, one of the worst seasons in team history.

Before James came, Montrezl Harrell, a former center for the Clippers and Lakers, participated in an earlier game and displayed his skills from both inside and outside by making a three-point shot. But after his game, when he noticed all the cameras and reporters, he questioned where they had been throughout the previous week’s games.

“I’ve been here for four weeks. Where you all been?” Harrell, a former Charlotte Hornets player, stated this. “What’s going on there?” Harrell’s inquiries were overheard by a fan, who had a response.

Hey, man, it’s LeBron James. The supporter shouted, “We all came to see him.”

James played with Chicago Bulls All-Standout DeMar DeRozan, a former star from Compton High and USC who participates in the Drew League every summer, and he did not disappoint, scoring 42 points, pulling down 16 rebounds, and making four steals.

When James attempted his first shot and missed it, the crowd gasped, their excitement building. James, who hadn’t competed in the Drew League since 2011, still had a lot to say.

After the game, James was snatched away while still having a crowd of people clamouring for at least one more glimpse at him. He was wearing a towel around his shoulders. Even though he declined to talk to reporters afterward, he expressed his appreciation on social media.

“Thank you @DrewLeague!!” James posted something on Twitter. “Loved the energy from start to finish!” Along with numerous additional expressions of thanks, he added the phrase “all for the city” and the emoji for an angel.

Despite rumors to the contrary, Kyrie Irving did not turn up for the Saturday morning game. But it didn’t matter. The presence of James was more than enough for the devoted supporters.
