After A Humiliating Loss To The Patriots, The Colts Fire Frank Reich

Frank Reich, the head coach of the Indianapolis Colts, has come under fire. The Indianapolis Colts sacked fifth-year head coach Frank Reich the day after one of their worst offensive games in recent memory. The news was later confirmed by the club.

After A Humiliating Loss To The Patriots, The Colts Fire Frank Reich

The Colts suffered their third straight loss on Sunday, falling to the New England Patriots 26-3. It was the most recent illustration of their growing offensive problems, which are starting to seem intractable despite the recent switch from Matt Ryan to Sam Ehlinger and the sacking of offensive coordinator Marcus Brady last week.

Jeff Saturday has been named the Colts’ temporary head coach. The Colts’ 47-year-old Saturday, a six-time Pro Bowl centre who played 13 seasons for them and is now an ESPN pundit, has served as a consultant and is a member of the team’s Ring of Honor. For three seasons, Saturday served as the head coach at the Hebron Christian Academy in Dacula, Georgia.

The Colts have planned a press conference with owner Jim Irsay, general manager Chris Ballard, and Saturday for 6 p.m. ET on Monday to go through the coaching transition.

In 2018, Frank Reich was hired after Josh McDaniels, the offensive coordinator for the Patriots at the time, turned down the Colts. With a 10-6 record in his debut season, he instantly assisted the Colts in reaching the postseason. But Frank Reich’s downfall was the quarterback turnover that started with Andrew Luck’s abrupt retirement.

In Irsay’s 25 years as Colts owner, Monday’s termination marked the first time he fired a coach in the middle of a regular season. Reich’s position was described as “safe” by NFL Network Insider Ian Rapoport just over a week ago. That attitude, though, swiftly shifted after a 26-3 defeat to New England.

It’s the third significant change in as many weeks for a struggling Indianapolis team that started the season with postseason ambitions but plummeted to 3-5-1 after suffering a thrashing by New England on Sunday.

In an unexpected turn of events, the Colts selected former offensive lineman Jeff Saturday as interim head coach on Monday. According to the team, Saturday was an Indianapolis player from 1999 to 2011 and has recently worked as a team consultant. He has no NFL experience.

During his tenure in Indianapolis, Frank Reich developed a reputation for being able to save the club from inevitable defeat. The Colts have a reputation for being sluggish starters, but they have regularly come back in the playoffs. The 2018 Colts had a 1-5 start but finished 10-6 and qualified for the playoffs. They struggled in the first few games of the previous season before winning their final two games to finish 9-6.

What is still unknown is what will happen to general manager Chris Ballard, who assembled the club and hired Reich.
