‘Wonder If He’s Earned Enough to Financially Retire’- Cris Cyborg Weighs In on Alexander Gustafsson Retirement Talks

Former UFC light heavyweight title contender Alexander Gustafsson has become the talk of the town following UFC London that wrapped up over the weekend. However, ‘The Mauler’ has unfortunately been in the headlines for all the wrong reasons.

Gustafsson was stopped via strikes in under two mins of his fight against the highly explosive Nikita Krylov. The loss has marked the fourth straight loss suffered by Gustafsson and he’s been finished violently in all of these losses.

Several big names within the MMA world have vocally spoken out about Alexander Gustafsson’s recent career decline. In fact, Gustafsson’s former rival Daniel Cormier took to Twitter and commented that Gustafsson was done and should walk away before absorbing any more damage.

Cormier didn’t mince his words in any way and his passionate plea to see Alexander Gustafsson hang up the gloves has become a talked-about topic amongst MMA fans.

“Gustafsson is done. He needs to walk away, these shots are hard but he used to eat those. The chin is gone, walk away my friend. We all have an expiration date. One of the best to not have had a title.”

Taking note of Daniel Cormier’s statement, former UFC champion Cris Cyborg chimed in with her two cents. Cyborg brought up a highly talked about concern in the MMA community regarding the ability of retired fighters to take care of themselves financially after hanging up the gloves.

While Cris Cyborg didn’t seem opposed to the idea of Alexander Gustafsson walking away, her primary concern revolved around his ability to support his family.

“I know he fought for the title multiple times but I have to wonder if he’s earned enough to financially retire.”

Gustafsson is a legend in the UFC and it’s likely that he’s done well for himself after starring in several blockbuster fights. Having fought Jon Jones on two separate occasions should in and off itself allow him financial stability. However, Cyborg’s point was well taken by several fans in the MMA world as fighter pay remains a talked about issue.
