Born on January 5, 1994, Matthew Grzelcyk is a professional ice hockey defenceman from the United States. He is presently a player with the National Hockey League’s Boston Bruins (NHL). In the third round of the 2012 NHL Entry Draft, he was chosen by the Bruins with the 85th overall pick.
He inked a two-year entry-level contract with the Boston Bruins on April 1, 2016, with the intent of playing for the team in 2016–17. During the remainder of the 2015–16 season, he played for the American Hockey League (AHL) Providence Bruins, Boston’s affiliate.

Grzelcyk made his NHL debut with the Boston Bruins on December 14, 2016, during a 4–3 overtime loss to the Pittsburgh Penguins.
Grzelcyk committed to the Bruins for two years in the summer before to the 2018–19 campaign. Grzelcyk sustained a head injury after Blues center Oskar Sundqvist elbowed him, preventing him and the Bruins from moving on to the 2019 Stanley Cup Finals. In spite of Sundqvist’s suspension for Game 3 of the championship series, the Blues eventually won the Stanley Cup.

Both Grzelcyk’s elder brother and father, John, are employed at TD Garden. John Grzelcyk Sr. began his employment at Boston Garden in 1967 and has continued to do so ever since. Grzelcyk’s father received a prostate cancer diagnosis on October 25, 2021, while receiving radiation therapy. John Sr. kept up his employment at TD Garden.

During this week’s fathers road trip, Boston Bruins defenseman Matt Grzelcyk’s father, John, had a good chuckle with the team’s social media staff.
“These guys owe us about two or three more of these [dads road trips],” John said in a video posted by the Bruins. “When we took them away for trips and everything when they were kids…all the money we spent on them for food, going to the arcades and the malls and stuff like that. They owe us…two or three more of these fathers trips and the debt is paid.”
