Senegalese basketball player Gorgui Dieng plays for the NBA’s San Antonio Spurs. He represented the Louisville Cardinals in college basketball. The Utah Jazz selected Dieng as the 21st overall choice in the 2013 NBA Draft. On draft night, he was traded to the Minnesota Timberwolves. Before being traded to the Memphis Grizzlies in February 2020, he played seven seasons with the organization. In March 2021, he and the Grizzlies came to a contract buyout agreement. In Thies, Senegal, Dieng attended the Sports for Education and Economic Development (SEEDS) Academy. Dieng had a 3.2 GPA while attending SEEDS. He was chosen as one of 60 potential players from all around Africa to attend the “Basketball Without Borders” camp in South Africa in 2009, and he was honored as the camp’s MVP.

The Utah Jazz picked Dieng with the 21st overall choice in the 2013 NBA Draft on June 27, then later that night, they traded Dieng, Shabazz Muhammad, and the 14th pick to the Minnesota Timberwolves in exchange for Trey Burke, the ninth pick.
