Virginia’s Terrible Performance Against Colorado In March Madness Has Everyone Questioning The Selection Committee

Tuesday night’s first half was one the Virginia Cavaliers will never forget.

Virginia’s Terrible Performance Against Colorado In March Madness Has Got Everyone Questioning The Selection Committee

In the First Four of the 2024 NCAA Men’s Basketball Tournament at UD Arena in Dayton, Ohio, on Tuesday night, the Colorado State Rams (25-10) dominated the Virginia Cavaliers (23-11), who put on another ice-cold offensive display. As a result, their run in the NCAA Tournament is short lived.

For a few minutes in the first half, Isaac McKneely’s two three-pointers after a Reece Beekman layup seemed to spark Virginia’s offense out of its shell and into a rhythm. However, it turned out that stretch was the exception rather than the rule.

After a string of unexpected conference tournament results limited the number of at-large bids available, many apparently worthy bubble teams were left out of the NCAA men’s basketball tournament.

Those teams are undoubtedly thinking back on Virginia’s showing from Tuesday night.

Seed No. 10 Virginia’s NCAA tournament First Four battle against Colorado State, a fellow No. 10 seed, was down 27–14 at the half at UD Arena.

Throughout the course of 20 minutes, the Cavaliers scored 14 points. They failed to hit the scoreboard again until 3:20 into the second half, having failed to score at all over the last 9:20 of the first half.

All rational observers of one of Virginia’s offensive possessions during the regular season anticipated a brick-fest from UVA, but instead of a brick-fest, we were forced to witness a terrifying display of sheer terror in the Cavaliers’ 67-42 defeat.

The majority was right when they said that the 23-11 Virginia squad didn’t deserve to be in the tournament, especially after the way they played Colorado State.

With just one field goal hit in the last 10:30 of the first half, Virginia scored an incredible 14 points in the first half. For the last 9:20 of the first half, the Cavaliers managed just two points, both of which came from successful free throws.

In the first half, Virginia shot 17.2% (5 of 29) from the field and 22.2% (2 of 9) from three-point range. Colorado State shot 42.9% from long range (3 of 7) and 50% from the field (12 of 24) with efficiency.

In the first half, Colorado State and Virginia combined for 41 points. For comparison, Missouri State defeated Wisconsin 43–32 in 1999 to record the lowest-scoring game in March Madness history (since the shot clock was introduced in 1986) with 75 total points.

CBS Questions The Selection Committee

The situation was so bad that not only did Wally Szczerbiak of CBS, the network that telecasts the NCAA Tournament, criticize Virginia, but he also criticized the tournament committee for awarding the Cavaliers a position in the competition.

“This performance matters by Virginia. Mountain West completely blew them off the floor. Mountain West, we’ve been saying, has been completely under-seeded, and the way you perform in this tournament, it puts the committee on notice,” Szczerbiak explained. “They made a mistake putting Virginia into the NCAA Tournament. Every bracketologist was saying it, they go out and play like this.”

“It’s unwatchable basketball the way they played on national TV.”

Colorado has won how many national championships?

In its history, Colorado has won 29 national titles, 20 of which have been in skiing, with the most recent one being in 2015. In a 2002 research by, it was placed #14 of “America’s Best Sports College.”

Is March Madness over for Virginia?

In their First Four battle with Colorado State, the Virginia Cavaliers were soundly defeated by the Rams, who never allowed the ‘Hoos to get back into the game after taking an early lead courtesy of a chilly UVA start.

Was Virginia the winner of March Madness before?

Virginia (23-11) has not triumphed in college basketball’s premier tournament since 2019, the third time it has made the trip without winning a game.
