UFC Lightweight star Islam Makhachev Slams ‘Easy Money’ Michael Chandler for Challenging Him to a Fight

Earlier in the week, UFC lightweight star Michael Chandler came out and talked about potentially facing Islam Makhachev now that Charles Oliveira is looking for a money fight against Conor McGregor. Makhachev and Oliveira are looked at as the two lightweights set to compete for the vacant title. However, McGregor’s impending return has cast some doubt over that potential scrap.

Michael Chandler is looking to swoop in and possibly take Makhachev’s spot by defeating him if they were to match up. His pitch to Islam Makhachev involved him saying that sitting out until McGregor and Oliveira conclude their business isn’t the way to go.

“Hey, Charles, do your thing, bro. Wait till Conor comes back, do your thing, you deserve it. On a couple fight win streak, smashing through everybody,” Chandler said on his Instagram story. “Why don’t you sit out? Wait for Conor to come back, I’ll keep the division warm, I’ll keep the division going.” [h/t bjpenn.com]

“I’ll fight Islam next, I’ll fight Islam next for the title. And then whenever you get your so-called superfight, do your thing, get it out of your system, then you can come back to our division. See you at the top.”

Not one to shy away from a battle, Islam Makhachev took to Twitter and responded to ‘easy money’ fight against ‘Iron’ Michael Chandler. Makhachev only has the gold belt on his mind and he’s keen to assert his dominance on all the top lightweights looking to take his spot.

Chandler is certainly a threat to fight for UFC gold once more, especially since he’s a three-time Bellator MMA lightweight champion and also someone who performed exceptionally in his fight against Charles Oliveira at UFC 262, right until he was defeated.

The lightweight title picture that was once clear-cut has become murky with the looming presence of Conor McGregor. The Irishman hasn’t competed since UFC 264 when he went all-out in a losing effort against Dustin Poirier that saw him sustain a near career-ending injury. Fans of ‘Notorious’ will expect him to be back with a vengeance as he’s look to pick up the lightweight strap once more.
