Travis Kelce: Trading Kadarius Toney Was A Huge Mistake Made By Giants

Travis Kelce, an All-Pro tight end for the Kansas City Chiefs, is perplexed by the circumstances behind the transfer of wide receiver Kadarius Toney from the New York Giants to his squad.

Travis Kelce: Trading Kadarius Toney Was A Huge Mistake Made By Giants

“I don’t know how he got out of that building,” Kelce said on the “New Heights w/ Jason & Travis Kelce” podcast that he hosts with his brother. “I don’t get it one bit…I don’t even want to know what happened over there. I am just extremely happy that [Chiefs general manager] Brett Veach found a way yet again to get an unbelievably talented player in this building.”

Fans of the giants are also confused. Toney, who was selected by the Giants with the 20th overall choice in the 2021 NFL Draft, spent most of his time working out with trainers and coaches off the field during his year and a half in East Rutherford.

On October 27, the Giants sent the troubled Toney to Kansas City in exchange for third- and sixth-round draft picked in 2019. Toney, who was rumoured to be injured or recovering or something, entered the game for the Chiefs right away and had an impact.

Fans of the Giants were surprised by that. Why wasn’t he able to accomplish that here?

Why they dealt him in the midst of the season, when they have a pitiful group of wide receivers and are advancing to the postseason, is unclear.

Toney has participated in two straight games since moving to Kansas City and has caught six catches for 69 yards, including his first NFL score. Additionally, he is returning punts and has run twice for 33 yards.

It’s still early in the Toney saga. Remember that the Giants traded the top pick in the fifth round (#164) of the Bears’ draft last year, the 11th overall pick, to Chicago in exchange for the 20th pick.

Toney has two catches for zero yards in two games with the Giants this season in limited play. This year, the Giants (7-2) have likewise had a very difficult time getting output from the receiver position. Toney caught 39 passes for 420 yards in 10 games last season.

Kelce is especially pleased by Toney’s skill in punt fielding.

“I never saw anyone catch punts like this,” Kelce said. “I would assume all the great ones do it like this. Usually, you get a guy; a punt’s in the air, they go sprinting back to where they think it’s going to go, then they’re back there trying to adjust to it… As soon as the punt happens, he sees where it’s going and casually starts walking… 10 feet before it gets to him. Finally, he gets ready and just snags it and is in full gamer mode.
