The Best Comebacks in NFL History

Most sports fans love an underdog story, and it’s no surprise that it’s appreciated in the NFL as well. Once teams start throwing for insane touchdowns to comeback from a major deficit, it becomes a classic, fan favorite game. Here’s a few of the best comebacks in NFL history:

New England Patriots vs. Atlanta Falcons (Super Bowl LI, 2017)

One of the greatest comebacks not just in Super Bowl history but in football in general, Tom Brady led the Patriots looking for his 5th championship win. However, the Falcons got an early lead and extended it all the way to 28-3. It seemed like an easy victory for the Falcons at the time.

Brady wouldn’t let that happen, though. He threw for 4 touchdowns to tie the game and then threw another one to seal their victory. The game was full of highlights such as Julian Edelman’s insane catch and Brady’s 5 touchdowns to win the game.

Indianapolis Colts vs Kansas City Chiefs (2014)

In a playoffs game between the Colts and the Chiefs, the Chiefs were up 38-10 and looked to finalize one of the biggest blowouts in NFL playoff history. Chiefs’ Alex Smith threw for four touchdowns and looked for more.

However, one of the Colts’ greatest quarterbacks, Andrew Luck, led the Colts past the 28-point deficit. He threw 5 touchdowns in the second half and had the best highlight of the game throwing a 64-yard touchdown pass to T.Y. Hilton to give the Colts a close victory with 45-44 lead in a game that looked like it was over.

Buffalo Bills vs Houston Oilers (1993)

In a playoff game between the Buffalo Bills and the Houston Oilers (now the Tennessee Titans), the Oilers created the biggest deficit in NFL history as they led 35-3 going into the 3rd quarter. The Bills lost the two prior Super Bowls and had to play a Wild Card game against the Oilers without their starting quarterback.

However, Bills quarterback Frank Reich threw four touchdowns, three of them to Andrew Reed, to make a comeback. The Bills would have the lead in the 4th quarter, but the Oilers would tie it up. In overtime, the Bills would win 41-38 and went to the Super Bowl for the 3rd time in a row.
