Surprising Players Who May Not Be On An NFL Team When 53-Man Rosters Come Out…

Soon enough before the NFL season begins, the current 90-Man pre-season roster will nearly cut in half as team prepare for the regular season by make their 53-man rosters. Who are some “household” names who potentially won’t even make their rosters?

Clyde Edwards-Helaire

With the emergence of seventh round rookie Isiah Pacheco, it seems like Clyde Edwards-Helaire spot as the RB one on the Chiefs is gone. CEH was a former first round pick for the Chiefs, but now in 2023, he is probably the 3rd or 4th best running back on the roster behind Pacheco and Jerrick McKinnon. Due to Edwards Hilaire being a first round pick he was entitled to the most money on his rookie contract, but since Pacheco and McKinnon are on small contracts and the better players, it makes no sense for the Chiefs to keep Edwards Hilaire on the roster and give him the most money for a limited amount of reps. It would also save some cab space for the Chiefs to cut Hilaire, especially considering that the Chiefs are very bare at the wide receiver position and could use the money to sign one of the free agent receivers. Clyde Edwards-Helaire fall from fame most likely stems from his injury riddled first two years in the league, it will be interesting to see what teams would take a chance on Clyde if he was to be cut from the Chiefs this off-season or even at the end of his rookie contract.

Cordarrelle Patterson

Cordarrelle Patterson’s potential release before the NFL regular season stems from a combination of factors. Firstly, his contract may not align with the team’s salary cap situation, prompting a need to create financial aid in the organization.Pattersons role and performance in training camp and preseason games might not match the team’s expectations or strategic plans, especially considering the Bijan Robinson and Tyler Allgiere will more than likely be ahead of him on the depth chart by the end of the pre-season. Teams often prioritize younger, cost-effective talents who offer long-term potential over veterans like Patterson. Injury concerns could also play a role, as his health status might raise questions about his ability to contribute consistently. Ultimately, Patterson’s fate depends on a complex factors of team dynamics, financial considerations, performance evaluations, and future prospects.

Jamison Crowder

The New York Giants surplus of wide receivers creates a roster dilemma, potentially leading to Jamison Crowder’s pre-season release. With a crowded depth chart, the team may prioritize younger talents and cap space savings. Sterling Shepard, breakout candidate Isaish Hodgins and Parris Campbell are established or high-potential options. Crowder’s release could free up money to go towards for other positions, and his overlapping which is already apparent in the other WRs might make him expendable to the Giants. As the Giants seek balance between talent, and money management, Crowder could become a casualty of their depth rich situation before the NFL season kicks off on September 7th. While it is true he only signed with the team in March it is definitely something to look out for considering the amount of half decent wide receivers the Giants have on their roster.
