When it comes to theatrics, the 71-year-old demonstrated on Sunday that he still has his fastball. After St. John’s lost to Seton Hall, he launched into yet another long tirade, referring to his first season with the Johnnies as “the most unenjoyable experience of my lifetime.”

After squandering a lead and falling for the eighth time in ten games, St. John’s was defeated by Seton Hall. With their current record of 14-12, the Red Storm are definitely eliminated from the NCAA Tournament.

Pitino is upset with his squad, but in his postgame news conference, he went too far.

“We are so unathletic that we can’t guard anybody without fouling,” said Pitino. “For me, I’ve always enjoyed the first year, and I’m not gonna lie to you: This is the most unenjoyable experience of my lifetime.

Less than a month had passed since St. John’s humiliating 80-65 defeat to the same Seton Hall squad away on the road when they lost 68-62 at home on Sunday. It was the team’s eighth defeat in its previous ten games and a squandered chance to secure a significant victory and build momentum for a late-round NCAA Tournament run.

With one month of games remaining until Selection Sunday, March Madness is still very much in the picture. However, Pitino publically attacked his squad following the loss, acting as though he would never see his players again. He went so far as to name specific players on the squad he recruited, in addition to labeling them as unathletic.

It’s quite uncommon to hear a head coach criticize his players in such a direct and personal way, much alone one as successful as Pitino.

“Didn’t you recruit most of the guys you mentioned?” A fan wrote.

“Rick Pitino throwing players HE RECRUITED (and a guy who made an all-Big East team last year) under the bus is not the best idea in the world,” a fan said.

“He’s losing it,” another admirer said.

“Again, every day I wake up thankful not to have to place my basketball hopes on Rick Pitino,” a different supporter said.

St. John’s has now dropped three straight games and has suffered defeats in five of the previous six games and eight of the previous ten overall.

The 71-year-old continued by labeling his team’s defense as “atrocious” and declaring that he is getting ready for another setback when the Red Storm plays Georgetown on February 21.
