QB Jimmy Garoppolo Reveals Details About PED Suspension

The former signal-caller for the Las Vegas Raiders, who has also played for the New England Patriots and San Francisco 49ers, said that he “messed up” the therapeutic use exemption procedure when he first got to Las Vegas.

According to earlier reports from ESPN, Garoppolo’s use of a prescription drug without a legitimate exemption authorization from the NFL was the reason for the suspension.

During his first news conference after signing a one-year contract with the Rams, Garoppolo informed reporters that he had violated the league’s rules regarding performance-enhancing substances.

According to The Associated Press, Garoppolo stated, “I just messed up the TUE, really.” “I hate to joke about it, but I messed up the TUE when I first got to Las Vegas. Bad timing, I guess.”

The Raiders’ announcement that Garoppolo will be released almost immediately was accompanied by news of his two-game suspension.

Under Rams head coach Sean McVay, who has aided in the development of numerous quarterbacks, most notably Baker Mayfield of Tampa Bay, Garoppolo will now have a fresh start in Los Angeles.

In the previous offseason, Garoppolo inked a $72.75 million, three-year contract with the Raiders. He was benched halfway through the season in favor of rookie Aidan O’Connell, who went on to start the remaining games when general manager Dave Zeigler and head coach Josh McDaniels were fired.

“I think he had a vision, talked me through it, really just explained what he saw my role as, and just his football knowledge,” Garoppolo said. “I’ve heard it from so many different players and coaches, but to be here firsthand and get to experience it, that’s what I’m really excited about.”

With the exception of a few protracted injury absences, Garoppolo has started at quarterback for the most of the last seven seasons after starting behind Tom Brady in New England.

He will serve as Matthew Stafford’s backup in Los Angeles. Stafford is set to begin his 16th NFL season, his fourth as the team’s starter. In a stellar 2023–24 season, the 36-year-old Stafford showed no signs of slowing down, guiding the Rams to 10 victories, a postseason trip, and a Pro Bowl selection.
