Phillies 1B Rhys Hoskins (abdomen tear) out for season

Philadelphia Phillies first baseman Rhys Hoskins is out for the rest of the season with an abdomen tear, an injury that will require surgery as early as next week.

Hoskins has been playing with the injury all season and was expected to have surgery for it in the offseason. But he aggravated it during a game on Aug. 5, ultimately ending his season.

“It just didn’t go as planned,” Hoskins told reporters Thursday. “It’s frustrating. It’s upsetting. I think just the magnitude of where we are as a team, with the time of year, right? You as a player, as a competitor, want to be able to be out there to help your team as much as you can. Obviously, there’s been a lot of effort the last couple weeks to try to make sure that was an option. Unfortunately, sometimes the body just doesn’t respond.”

The recovery period is 6-to-8 weeks.

The Phillies placed Hoskins on the 10-day injured list earlier in the day.

Hoskins was batting .247 and led the Phillies in home runs (27), doubles (29) and RBIS (71). He went 1-for-4 with a solo homer in Wednesday’s 7-4 loss to the Tampa Bay Rays.

The Phillies also activated right-hander Zach Eflin (kneecap) and left-hander Jose Alvarado (shoulder) from the injured list and designated right-hander Chase Anderson for assignment.

However, Eflin (4-7, 4.17 ERA) was scratched from his start Thursday night against the visiting Arizona Diamondbacks with a flare-up in the knee that sent him to the IL.

Alvarado is 6-1 with four saves and a 4.35 ERA in 45 games this season.

Anderson is 2-4 with a 6.75 ERA in 14 games (nine starts) in 2021.
