Either late Friday night or early Saturday morning was when the incident took place. MSU coach Tom Izzo announced that Fears had surgery in a statement that was made public on Saturday.

“Jeremy underwent surgery this morning and is resting comfortably,” MSU coach Tom Izzo said in a statement. “While there is much we still don’t know, my focus is supporting Jeremy on his road to recovery.”

A message with the Joliet Police Department was not immediately returned. The department posted a statement to its Facebook page about a shooting that occurred at 3:44 a.m. Saturday at a residence in the 300 block of St. Jude Avenue in Joliet.

According to 1340 AM (WJOL in Crest Hill, Illinois), Fears was one of the two people shot at the home in the Marycrest subdivision on the west side of Joliet.

Prior to his first season in Lansing, Fears was considered one of Illinois’ best prospects. As to the profile provided on the MSU sports page, Jeremy Fears Sr., his father, was also a collegiate basketball player. Although he played for Ohio University, Bradley University was where he completed his undergraduate studies.

The area was thoroughly searched by police, but they were unable to find the perpetrator. The purpose of the gunshot and its intended victim were still a mystery as of Saturday afternoon.

Authorities stated that when investigators searched for the culprits on Saturday afternoon, the inquiry was still in its early phases.

The Investigations Division of the Joliet Police Department was urged to be contacted at 815-724-3020 by anybody with information or video evidence pertaining to the event.

Fears shared a photo of himself wearing a robe and lying in what looks to be a hospital bed on his Instagram story.

“Minor setback,” he stated, “we gone be good appreciate yall.”

Fears’ father, Jeremy Fears Sr., informed the Chicago Sun-Times that following a three-hour procedure, his son is expected to miss six to eight weeks of work.

Through 12 games this season, the 18-year-old has averaged 3.5 points.
