“Let’s Get Marine Paul Whelan Home”: NFL Starlet Robert Griffin ‘Celebrates’ Brittney Griner’s Release From Russia
Brittney Griner, an incarcerated American basketball player, was traded to the USA for renowned arms dealer Viktor Bout, who had been detained in an American jail for 12 years. According to President Joe Biden, Griner is safe and returning home from the United Arab Emirates aboard an aircraft. This long-awaited announcement has pleased the sports community. Since being detained in a Moscow airport with less than one gram of cannabis oil in her luggage in February, Griner has been detained in a Russian jail.
Brittney was given a nine-year prison term in Russia and eventually transferred to a severe correctional camp. According to reports, Griner was returned home as part of a transaction for convicted Russian weapons dealer Viktor Bout.

“I’m glad to say Brittney’s in good spirits… she needs time and space to recover,” Joe Biden said at the White House.
In July, the Biden administration suggested a prisoner swap, knowing that Moscow had long demanded Bout’s release. Two private aircraft flew the duo from Moscow and Washington, respectively, to Abu Dhabi airport for the elaborate swap, and then flew them back home.

While he welcomed Ms. Brittney Griner’s release, imprisoned US Marine Paul Whelan told CNN in a recent interview that he was “led to believe things were moving in the right direction” with efforts to secure his own release. He added that he was “greatly disappointed” not to have been included in the prisoner exchange.
