Kevin Durant and Kyrie Irving Most Likely Staying in Brooklyn
The NBA postseason was swept by possible trade rumors involving the Brooklyn Nets’ superstar duo Kevin Durant and Kyrie Irving. However, as the free agency moratorium period approaches (Aug 2-6) and more teams offer their star players supermax contracts, KD and Kyrie are most likely going to stay with the Brooklyn Nets.
Kyrie Irving already signed a player option with the Nets to play for one more year. While the Nets are talking with the Lakers around a trade that involves Kyrie Irving and Russell Westbrook, it seems like they will stay put with their teams, especially since Westbrook has long since picked up a $47 million player option, and Kyrie’s availability is in question as his refusal to take the COVID vaccine only allowed him to play away games for the Nets.
As for Kevin Durant, trade talks with multiple teams have not followed through. One prospective team was the Phoenix Suns, a championship contending team from last year that was defeated by the Dallas Mavericks in the Western Conference semifinals. Nets demanded that Devin Booker be added as a part of the trade, but Booker already accepted a supermax contract extension from the Suns, killing off that possible trade.
That is not to say that it is impossible to trade them away. According to Adrian Wojnarowski via Bleacher report, Nets need draft picks as they were given away in exchange for James Harden and attempting to build a championship team with 3 superstar players, and with All-Star caliber players, we might just see Durant heading elsewhere. But for now, it’s safe to say that duo will run it back in Brooklyn.
