Justin Herbert Talks Hold-In Issues Amidst Contract Talks With Chargers

The Los Angeles Chargers remain hopeful that they will be able to reach a long-term agreement with standout quarterback Justin Herbert before the start of training camp in late July.

Justin Herbert Talks Hold-In Issues Amidst Contract Talks With Chargers

Justin Herbert, the quarterback for the LA Chargers, may use an unusual strategy to advance his contract negotiations with the NFL team.

The Los Angeles Chargers quarterback did, however, suggest that, if a contract isn’t made before the start of training camp, missing sessions would be an option.

On Wednesday, Herbert was questioned about the possibility of staging a hold-in during camp if the parties are unable to come to an agreement.

“When it comes time for camp, the role of the quarterback is to be out there for his team and do everything that he can to put that team in a position to win,” he said, via the team’s official transcript. “I understand that responsibility. It’s something that you’ll address when the time comes, but I guess we’ll see.”

That’s certainly not a “no.”

The hold-in has evolved into the new leverage play as a result of the new CBA, which makes holdouts more expensive for players and eliminates teams’ power to void fines for skipping the required work.

A player shows up for meetings but declines to go out on the field with his teammates to practice because of an injury.

Although Herbert hasn’t participated in a preseason game, the Chargers are implementing a new scheme and have hired Kellen Moore as their offensive coordinator. All parties would wish to steer clear of any obstacles throughout the training camp installation procedure.

It is noteworthy that Herbert did not categorically rule it out, although observing that missing camp practices “would put you quite into the deficit,” particularly learning new coordinator Kellen Moore’s offense.

Before the start of the regular season, Joe Burrow of Cincinnati and Herbert are set to make money. Both quarterbacks might surpass the five-year contracts that Lamar Jackson ($260 million, $185 guaranteed) of Baltimore and Jalen Hurts ($255 million, $179.3 guaranteed) of Philadelphia inked earlier this year. Both quarterbacks were chosen in the 2020 draft.

In the last three seasons, Herbert has finished second in the league in terms of completions (1,316), passing yards (14,089), and touchdown passes (102).
