Manager Bob Melvin is the new sheriff in town in San Francisco, and he’s making everyone in the Giants dugout stand on the field for the playing of the national anthem.
Giants Manager Bob Melvin Brings In New Policy: Requires Everyone To Stand Up During The National Anthem
It differs significantly from the Gabe Kapler administration. Following the mass shooting at an elementary school in Uvalde, Texas, in 2022, he ceased playing during the playing of the national anthem. In 2020, following the death of George Floyd, he participated in numerous games while kneeling in protest.
Yet Melvin is adamant that this is unrelated to politics.
“Look, we’re a new team here, we got some good players here,’’ Melvin told the outlet.”It’s more about letting the other side know that we’re ready to play. I want guys out here ready to go. There’s a personality to that.
"It's home, I was a player for the @SFGiants… it's kind of a full-circle thing and being back in San Francisco is really nice."

“It has nothing to do with whatever happened in the past or whatever, it’s just something I embrace.”
In order to foster a feeling that everyone is in this together, Melvin remarked that this was something he had done in previous areas he had managed, such as Oakland and San Diego.
“You want your team ready to play and I want the other team to notice it, too,’’ Melvin said. “It’s as simple as that. They’re embracing it.”

In contrast to Gabe Kapler, the team’s former manager, who stopped playing during the national anthem in 2022 following the mass shooting at Robb Elementary School in Uvalde, Texas, and who kneeled in protest for multiple games in 2020 after George Floyd’s death sparked nationwide protests, Melvin also made it clear that his reasoning has nothing to do with politics.
