GG Jackson Overcame Self Doubt When He Didn’t Know What Future Was Holding For Him

The addition of a diamond in the rough prospect GG Jackson, who was chosen 45th overall in the most recent election, is without a doubt one of the biggest positives to emerge from this year’s campaign.

“Just not giving up,” Jackson said. “When training camp started, even before that, when we were having open runs in the summer, literally every day I was going back home crying. It was so bad.”

“I’ve never felt like I was bad at basketball before other than when I first joined CP3 and then when I got here. I was like ‘the gap between me and these dudes is crazy.’ But I stuck with it. I had to grind it out. I had to understand that yeah, you’re young, but you’re here for a reason.”

Jackson had a rather unusual journey to the NBA since he was the youngest player in the league having only turned 19 in December. The Columbia, South Carolina native, who was the highest-ranked recruit in school history, played his one season of college at home. Despite being benched at one point during the season, he had some big sparks during his first season on a terrible South Carolina club.

Due to many injuries to key players, Jackson was able to play with the varsity squad for the first time in early January, after spending over three months in and out of the G League.

The youngster has shown himself to be a genuine steal in the draft since January 13. Over the course of 17 games, he has averaged 14.6 points, 4.3 rebounds, and nearly a block while shooting 47.5 percent from the field and 42.1 percent from beyond the arc.

Some teams were hesitant to take him due to reports of maturity difficulties and the fact that he was just 18 years old, but the Grizzlies called his name with the 45th overall choice.

His play has made him a player that other teams hope to select in the 2023 NBA Draft. The Grizzlies also see him as a potential long-term organizational building block, as evidenced by their decision to extend his two-way contract in early February to a multi-year agreement.

Jackson’s rookie year serves as a crystal-clear reminder that almost anything is possible for someone to accomplish with perseverance and hard effort. Through his unwavering perseverance, mindset, and exceptional performance on the court, the youngster has unequivocally demonstrated his rightful place in this league.
