Former Secretary of State Enters NFL World With a Minority Ownership in Denver Broncos

Condoleezza Rice has become a minority owner of the Denver Broncos. Rice has joined the organization, according to a recent announcement from Rob Walton, whose Walton-Penner family recently acquired the Broncos. She likely will own a very minor portion of the team but will benefit the club by using her contacts in politics.

Adding another powerful Black woman to the limited group of investors in Denver led by Walmart heir Rob Walton and his daughter- and son-in-law, the chain announced Rice’s inclusion in the Walton-Penner Family ownership group on Monday morning.

Condoleezza joins Denver Broncos ownership

“We’re pleased to welcome former Secretary of State Condoleezza Rice to our ownership group,” Walton’s statement said.

“A highly respected public servant, accomplished academic and corporate leader, Secretary Rice is well known as a passionate and knowledgeable football fan who has worked to make the sport stronger and better. She is the daughter of a football coach and served on the inaugural College Football Playoff Committee. She moved to Denver with her family when she was 12 years old and went on to attend the University of Denver for both college and graduate school. Her unique experience and extraordinary judgment will be a great benefit to our group and the Broncos organization.”

The Rice family moved to Denver, Colorado, in 1967. She graduated from Cherry Hills Village, Colorado’s St. Mary’s Academy, an all-girls Catholic high school, in 1971 when she was 16 years old. Her father was an assistant dean at the University of Denver when Rice enrolled there.

After her sophomore year, Rice attended the Aspen Music Festival and School while initially majoring in music. She subsequently recalled going there and encountering pupils with more skill than she did, which made her question the likelihood of a future as a pianist. She started to think about switching her major.
