Foremost Challenge For Chargers This Season Is To Beat Chiefs To Top Of AFC West

Depending on who you ask, there are different levels of anticipation for the Los Angeles Chargers heading into the 2023 NFL season. They are prepared to compete for the top place in the AFC West, according to some analysts, because they took the necessary actions during free agency and the most recent draft.

Foremost Challenge For Chargers This Season Is To Beat Chiefs To Top Of AFC West

The Kansas City Chiefs and Los Angeles Chargers are now very closely matched after several close games that were decided on the final play during primetime. In two games played during primetime last season, the Chiefs narrowly prevailed on Thursday Night Football and Sunday Night Football by three points.

To begin the season, the Los Angeles Chargers have a straightforward objective. Although winning the Super Bowl is the ultimate objective, the team’s immediate focus must be on defeating the Kansas City Chiefs and claiming the AFC West title. This won’t be simple. It’s feasible for Justin Herbert, Joey Bosa, Brandon Staley, and the rest of the team to win the division, but it’s not likely given that their competitors have won the trophy the last seven seasons in a row.

With Joe Lombardi’s dismissal, one of the Chargers’ main issues from last season is finally resolved. Kellen Moore has taken his position as offensive coordinator, and when you combine those two things, he’ll be in charge of a healthy Justin Herbert  with a number of passing options, it should be quite the show in SoFi Stadium this season.

In addition to re-signing numerous important players including offensive tackle Trey Pipkins, defensive end Morgan Fox, and tight end Donald Parham, LA also added linebacker Eric Kendricks in free agency. They also did well in the draft, selecting players at critical positions including linebacker Daiyan Henley, defensive end Tuli Tuipulotu, and wide outs Quentin Johnston and Derius Davis.

The Chargers’ roster as a whole is stronger than it was the previous year, and this infusion of quality will help the squad aim to outperform its 10-7 record from the previous year. And it will need to get better by somewhere between two and five games.

By hiring Orlando Brown Jr. and Jawaan Taylor, two significant offensive tackles this summer, Kansas City solved their greatest issue. Additionally, they re-signed running back Jerick McKinnon, center Nick Allegretti, safety Devin Bush, and pass rusher Charles Omenihu.

The Chiefs made wise selections in the draft, acquiring skill, value, and filling needy positions. DE This year, Felix Anudike-Uzomah, Rashee Rice, Wanya Morris, and Keondre Coburn may all have significant roles.

As the Chiefs continue to add talent every summer, the rich only appear to be getting richer in the AFC West.

We didn’t get to witness Herbert at his finest in season one. Herbert suffered severe rib cartilage injury in a Week 2 Chargers-Chiefs game, and the remainder of the season he wasn’t the same. We didn’t get the full Herbert experience, but he nevertheless guided his teams to nine more victories.

Herbert will return this year in excellent health and with an additional year of expertise.

Herbert was sacked once during the game and the Chargers reported him as having an undisclosed left shoulder injury on their injury report for Week 18.

Herbert claimed he’s “more concerned” with shoulder rehabilitation than a new contract, but he can only exert so much control.

The Chargers have backup quarterback Easton Stick on a one-year contract and drafted former TCU standout Max Duggan in the seventh round of the 2023 NFL Draft.

This year, the AFC West and NFC North divisions will clash due to the scheduling. There should be a ton of exciting games in the freshly renovated AFC East as well.

The Cincinnati Bengals and Philadelphia Eagles, who the Chiefs defeated in the Super Bowl, will both be opponents for the Chiefs in 2023.

LA’s game against the New York Jets in early November has already been scheduled for Monday Night Football, and their contest versus the Buffalo Bills on December 23 should be entertaining to watch.

This year’s AFC West should provide entertainment once more.
