Fairleigh Dickinson Players Stuck In Elevator Caused Delay In The Game Against Long Island

The men’s basketball team at Fairleigh Dickinson encountered difficulties travelling to and from their Thursday game against Long Island University.

Fairleigh Dickinson Players Stuck In Elevator Caused Delay In The Game Against Long Island

After FDU players became trapped in the elevator at the Steinberg Wellness Center in Brooklyn while attempting to make their way from the locker room to the court, the Knights against Sharks game had to be postponed.

The players were finally saved by the FDNY after spending fifteen minutes in the “hot” elevator.

About fifteen minutes were added to the game’s delay, which occurred after Tana Kopa of LIU forced overtime by matching the score at 79 all with 33 seconds remaining. With 4:30 left in overtime, Heru Bligen scored the only field goal for FDU, while Kopa’s half-court heave at the buzzer rimmed out.

Bligen concluded the game for FDU (12-14, 6-5 Northeast Conference) with 14 points and 8 rebounds.

LIU (6-18, 5-7) was led by Kopa’s 18 points and Nikola Djapa’s 16 points and 10 rebounds.

It took over seventeen minutes for the Northeast Conference game to eventually start.

The Sharks didn’t appear to have much of an edge because FDU eventually defeated LIU, 84-82, in overtime.

When Fairleigh Dickinson beat Purdue, the top-seeded team in the NCAA Tournament, last season, it garnered national attention. It was only the second time in tournament history that a No. 16 seed had defeated the number one seed.

In a post on X on Thursday night, Fox Sports college basketball commentator John Fanta made light of the situation by referencing the Purdue victory and the elevator controversy from the previous year.

“Purdue’s got nothing on FDU. But the Knights have met their match in a New York elevator shaft,” Fanta said jokingly.

The University of Miami men’s basketball team was locked in an elevator during the NCAA Tournament the previous year, thus FDU wasn’t the only collegiate basketball team to have this problem in recent memory.

Before their unexpected victory over Houston, the Hurricanes convened a defensive-focused meeting, which left them stranded in the elevator for thirty minutes.
