ESPN’s Adam Schefter : No Trade Market For QB Trey Lance Whereas Sam Darnold Can Excel

Did you really believe that no one would mention the possibility that the San Francisco 49ers’ decision to trade up in the 2021 selection was influenced by their desire to re-select Mac Jones? I’m sorry to disappoint you, Adam Schefter.

ESPN’s Adam Schefter: No Trade Market For QB Trey Lance Whereas Sam Darnold Can Excel

On Wednesday, “Pat McAfee Show” guest Adam Schefter of ESPN was questioned about the quarterback room in San Francisco. Adam “Pacman” Jones, a former professional cornerback, questioned Schefter more directly about if the Niners would move Lance before to training camp.

The 49ers will probably name Lance as the third quarterback on their depth chart, after Brock Purdy and Sam Darnold, despite the fact that he was the third choice in the 2021 NFL Draft.

“There was no trade market, and Kyle Shanahan said that no trade discussions with teams took place. Right now, he’s not moving,” Schefter added of Lance.

“I don’t think that’s right,” Schefter said of the talk about internal debate. “I’m just telling you, they traded up with the idea that they loved Mac Jones, okay? When they made that trade, they traded up with the idea that they’re going to draft Mac Jones while also having—I think it was six weeks to the draft, maybe a little less—a month or so to look at the other prospects.

“And while they looked at the other prospects, they fell in love with the intangibles that Trey Lance demonstrated. He did testing and tested off the charts in terms of intelligence. They brought him in the building. The guy was ultra-impressive. And even though they traded up with the idea of picking Mac Jones,  while doing their work, they became enamored with this guy and the upside that he had.”

“Sam Darnold signed with the 49ers on the first day of free agency … that tells you that the team really liked that guy, and they really did like Sam Darnold. Let’s also be very clear that Brock Purdy, if he’s healthy, he’s the guy, he’s the starting quarterback, he’s the No. 1. If he’s not, if for some reason he can’t go, we’ll see how Darnold and Trey Lance do in camp this summer. My guess would be Darnold has a chance to really shine and excel.”

At quarterback, Lance has started four games out of the last two  years, totaling 797 yards in the air and 235 yards on the ground.
