Coach Andy Reid Discusses “Corn Dog Play” That Help Them Win Super Bowl 2024

When Patrick Mahomes found Mecole Hardman for the game-winning touchdown in the Kansas City Chiefs’ 25-22 victory over the San Francisco 49ers to end Super Bowl LVIII on Sunday, it was evident that the infamous “Corn Dog” presnap motion, which resulted in two touchdowns in the team’s Super Bowl victory last year, had returned.

However, Corn Dog goes by Tom and Jerry this time around.

Two things will be evident long after Super Bowl LVIII has passed and the Kansas City Chiefs have won their third title in the last five years: Andy Reid and Patrick Mahomes will always be there. The play “Corn Dog” is still effective.

The game-winning play that sealed Sunday’s 25–22 overtime thriller between the San Francisco 49ers and his club, which is ironically named after a culinary item, was eloquently explained by Reid.

Head coach Andy Reid dissected the play that saw Patrick Mahomes strike Mecole Hardman for a walk-off touchdown in overtime to upset the San Francisco 49ers in a postgame interview with NBC’s Peter King.

Reid remarked, “We call it Tom and Jerry.” “It involves a couple people.”

Why Tom and Jerry?

Reid said, “They’re dirty little rats, dog gone it.” Thus, the play was good. I include [Jerrick] McKinnon in that. Pat then reads something.”

In essence, the Corn Dog/Tom and Jerry action is a player racing straight out toward the sideline after hard jogging in a pre-snap motion toward the line of scrimmage. The receiver completes the play after the quarterback fires a fast throw. That resulted in Mahomes to Kadarius Toney and then Skyy Moore scoring the Chiefs’ final two scores in their 38-35 victory against the Philadelphia Eagles in Super Bowl LVII.

Kansas City used wide receiver Mecole Hardman to wrap up the winning drive. Hardman found himself wide open on the right side of the field and easily snagged a 3-yard touchdown throw from Mahomes to seal the victory.

The Chiefs also ran the “Corn Dog” in last year’s Super Bowl win against the Philadelphia Eagles, when Mahomes found Kadarius Toney for a game-tying touchdown.

How many Super Bowl rings does Andy Reid have?

Football alumni from BYU The Kansas City Chiefs’ head coach, Andy Reid, guided his team to a 25–22 overtime victory over San Francisco in Super Bowl LVIII on Sunday in Las Vegas. The win gave Reid four career Super Bowl rings, including three as head coach. The Chiefs also won back-to-back titles.

Why did Travis Kelce yell at the coach during Super Bowl?

Isiah Pacheco, the running back for the Chiefs, mishandled the ball deep in 49ers territory, setting up the moment. When the Chiefs lost the ball, Kelce was not on the field, and CBS commentator Tony Romo said that at the time, Kelce was telling Reid that he wanted to keep him in the game.

Was Andy Reid going to retire?

Andy Reid states that he has no intention of retiring following Super Bowl LVIII.
