Chiefsaholic Found Guilty In The Case Of Bank Robbery, Granted Imprisonment Of 50 Years

After a months-long manhunt last year, Xavier Babudar, the Kansas City Chiefs superfan known as “ChiefsAholic,” entered a guilty plea to bank robbery and money laundering charges on Wednesday. This marked the end of federal proceedings against Babudar, whose fanaticism gained prominence on social media.

Chiefsaholic Found Guilty In The Case Of Bank Robbery, Granted Imprisonment Of 50 Years

Xaviar Babudar, a well-known fan on social media for dressing up as a werewolf during Chiefs games, has confessed to stealing over $800,000 from bank robberies in the Midwest in previous years and using the money to wager on Chiefs games.

The 29-year-old entered a guilty plea to one count each of bank robbery, money laundering, and carrying stolen items over state lines.

“His violent crime spree across the Midwest and beyond traumatized bank employees and victimized financial institutions in seven states,” U.S. Attorney Teresa Moore said in a statement. “The defendant tried to conceal hundreds of thousands of dollars in stolen cash by using it to gamble online and at casinos, but the odds caught up with him. With today’s conviction, he will be held accountable for the full scope of his criminal conduct, including his attempt to flee from justice.”

Prosecutors claim that in June 2022, before the 2022 NFL season began, Babudar wagered $10,000 at an Illinois casino on two different outcomes: the Chiefs winning the Super Bowl and Chiefs quarterback Patrick Mahomes receiving MVP of Super Bowl 57.

Babudar received a cheque in March 2023 for the $100,000 he won from his bets after Kansas City beat Philadelphia. After receiving his rewards, Babudar disconnected his ankle monitor and left Oklahoma. Eventually, on July 7, he was taken into custody in Sacramento, California.

The maximum penalty for the charges is 50 years in jail. In addition, he must turn over any property connected to his money laundering activities to the authorities and pay the victim financial institutions at least $532,675 in reparation. Among the items on that property is an FBI-retrieved autographed artwork of Chiefs quarterback Patrick Mahomes.

According to ESPN, Babudar’s lawyer, Matthew Merryman, informed reporters outside the courthouse that the plea agreement lowers the counts from twenty to three.

“Today was a big day for Xaviar Babudar,” Merryman said. “He took responsibility for his actions. He stood up in court, humble and repentant, and admitted what he had done. … Moving from 20 charges down to three charges, it was an opportunity. Xaviar Babudar would never physically harm anyone.”
