Cardinals’ Willson Contreras Takes Vicious Jab At Cubs

Two of baseball’s oldest teams, the St. Louis Cardinals and Chicago Cubs, have a longstanding rivalry that is never short on drama, memorable events, and animosity. And Willson Contreras’ next innovation won’t let you down.

The new Cardinals backstop, who signed a five-year, $87.5 million deal this offseason to stay in the NL Central, recently made some remarks that will infuriate Cubs supporters.

Cardinals’ Willson Contreras Takes Vicious Jab At Cubs

The 2016 World Champion Chicago Cubs, who broke a 108-year title drought for that team, had Willson Contreras as a key player. Together with Kris Bryant, Anthony Rizzo, and Javier Baez, he was one of the homegrown players that helped the North Side of the city usher in a new age of baseball. Yet after choosing to leave for rival St. Louis in the offseason, and gratitude for anything Contreras did in front of Cubs fans must have suffered. Even just that had to be a stomach hit.

“For me, I like this better. It’s a better organization. Old school way, which I love it,” Contreras said. “Ever since I got here it’s been everything just one way. The Cardinal way.” When talking about the Cardinals, he said “for me, I like this better. It’s a better organization.”

But these comments? Contreras will almost certainly hear jeers when he returns to Wrigley Field this season.

After leaving a club, a player may harbour certain sentiments about them, but after spending so many years in Chicago and winning a title, could he openly claim that the Cardinals are a “superior organisation”? That must be painful for the Cubs and their supporters. In the meanwhile, Contreras ought to swiftly become a fan favourite even before appearing in front of the Cardinals’ supporters.

Since Yadier Molina departed, St. Louis has a new catcher and has just won the NL Central for the first time since 2019. As much money the Cubs spent this offseason, Willson Contreras was never truly replaced.

In 2023, they will instead start Miguel Amaya, 23, the experienced Tucker Barnhart, and Yan Gomes behind the plate. upgrades, to put it mildly.

Willson Contreras recently injected additional excitement to the Cardinals-Cubs rivalry, not that it needed any more.
