Cameras capture Emilie Meyer’s reaction at Chargers rookie Joe Alt’s draft party

The first offensive lineman chosen in the NFL Draft of 2024 was Joe Alt. Rather than go to Detroit to witness the draft, the former outstanding player for Notre Dame chose to stay home.

With their fifth overall draft choice this year, the Los Angeles Chargers chose Alt. The Chargers were chosen, as announced by NFL Commissioner Roger Goodell. Then the cameras cut to Alt, who was encircled by friends and relatives. However, videos of Alt’s girlfriend’s response to the moment that changed her life started making the rounds on social media.

When the cameras panned to Emilie Meyer’s seat at the draft party, it seemed as though she was wearing a serious expression. Emilie Meyer and Alt went to the same private high school in Minnesota.

Since the broadcasts usually involve a brief lag, Meyer might not have known when Alt was seen on camera which NFL team she would be playing for.

Still, Meyer’s response was captured in a video that went viral on social media. “Blink twice if you need rescue,” a commenter on X said.

“That’s the face of someone who realized that his game checks will be taxed at 65% because he’ll be in Cali,” someone else joked, adding two laughing face emojis to the post.

In addition to paying taxes on his payment from the Chargers, Alt will also be required to pay taxes when the team travels for away games.

Professional athletes frequently incur what’s referred to as the “jock tax.” It is a kind of income tax that is typically levied against performers and professional athletes. According to tax preparation business H&R Block, it basically taxes the money that visitors to a state make.

Afterward, Meyer was spotted having fun at the draft party with Alt and other people. She participates in track and field competitions for Drake University as an athlete.

Although the selection of an offensive lineman in the top five by the Chargers drew criticism, head coach Jim Harbaugh defended the move.

“Offensive linemen we look at as weapons,” Harbaugh said. “That group when we talk about attacking, when we talk about attacking on offense, offensive line is the tip of the spear.”

During his protracted stay at Michigan, Harbaugh honed his physical type of football, and it seems like Alt will be a key component of the Chargers’ new offensive style.
