He got offers from a number of NCAA Division I institutions, including UCLA, Oregon, and Washington, and was the top-ranked player from Washington in the 2018 class before deciding to enroll at USC. Porter became the first USC player to be listed as a five-star prospect by Rivals since DeMar DeRozan in 2008.
Porter was chosen by the Milwaukee Bucks as the 30th overall pick in the 2019 NBA Draft; however, he was eventually transferred to the Cleveland Cavaliers via the Detroit Pistons. Porter was dealt to the Houston Rockets on January 21, 2021, in exchange for a future top-55 protected second-round pick.

Kevin was born on 4 May 2000 in Seattle, Washington, United States to parents Bryan Kevin Porter Sr. and Ayanna Porter. In the 1990s, his father attended Rainier Beach High School in Seattle and participated in baseball, basketball, and football. When Porter was four years old in July 2004, his father was shot five times and killed while attempting to defend a victim of an assault.
