‘Knew This Was Going to be the Last One…’- Donald ‘Cowboy’ Cerrone Reveals Fight Against Conor McGregor Was the Begining of the End of His UFC Career

UFC legend Donald ‘Cowboy’ Cerrone called it quits on a long, accolade-filled career following his loss to Jim Miller at UFC 276. ‘Cowboy’ was submitted at 01:32 of the second round on the preliminary card of the most recent PPV that went down in Las Vegas.

Cerrone lost six of his last seven fights, with one of the seven fights ending in a No Contest against Niko Price at UFC Fight Night: Woodley vs Covington. Not having won a fight since May 2019, it came as a surprise to no one that Cerrone’s time inside the octagon would soon come to an end.

Cerrone revealed in his post-fight presser that he simply didn’t have the same passion for the game anymore. He revealed that no one in his immediate circle was aware of his decision to walk away. However, he reaffirmed that he’s looking forward to the next phase in his life

“I don’t love it anymore like I used to. Last night I couldn’t sleep. I was up until six in the morning laying there, and I’m not going to miss those feelings, I’ll tell you that. But it was good to go in there. I surprised the hell out of my team.”

“They had no idea it was coming. My wife didn’t know. No one knew. It was a good secret I had. Talk about emotional, yeah, but I feel good. It’s like the biggest sigh of relief I’ve ever had in my life. ‘Ooh. Aah. We’re done.’ Now it’s off to the next chapter.” [h/t mmafighting.com]

He also revealed that his interest in the sport declined around early 2020 when he welcomed Conor McGregor back into the cage. ‘Notorious’ went on to defeat Cerrone via TKO in just 40 seconds back at UFC 246.

“Before I fought McGregor, I knew,” Cerrone said. “Then after the McGregor fight, I took another fight and I was just going through the motions. I didn’t enjoy it, didn’t love it. I knew the time was soon I just had to pick the right time. So I took a lot of time off and then called my agent and said let’s get a fight, and I just knew this was going to be the last one…”
