“Ready to Move On”: Baker Mayfield Opens Up on His Chances of Starting For Browns Next Season

The Cleveland Browns’ quarterback dilemma is the greatest NFL offseason narrative this year since the team has doubts about two of its starting quarterbacks. Many believed Baker Mayfield would get the chance to start for the Browns this season, but Watson may be sidelined for the entirety of the campaign due to his unresolved legal concerns.

That seems improbable. Cleveland has the cards for Baker Mayfield’s future, even if the Browns have no influence over the outcome of the league’s investigation into claims of sexual assault or misconduct against Deshaun Watson, which resulted in 24 civil complaints (20 of which were resolved) and two more to be filed.

Some have questioned if Baker Mayfield would reenter the Cleveland lineup amid rumors that the league is pressing for punishment for Deshaun Watson that would last at least a year.

When Mayfield made an appearance at a kid football camp in Norman, Oklahoma, on Tuesday, a fan questioned him about the possibility of a reunion with the Browns. Despite the uncertainty surrounding Watson’s availability, Mayfield stated that “it’s been very evident the mutual decision on both sides is to move on.”

“No. I think for that to happen, there would have to be some reaching out. But we’re ready to move on, I think, on both sides,” Mayfield said, via Carey Murdock.

The result of Watson’s disciplinary case may put the Browns in a desperate situation, therefore they should be proactive in figuring out their quarterback strategy for the 2022 season. Although it appears that Mayfield may be moving soon, a few clubs have shown the greatest interest in him throughout the off-season.

The Seattle Seahawks are one of those groups. The two quarterbacks on Cleveland’s roster are Jacoby Brissett and Josh Dobbs, and, barring a change of heart on the Mayfield front, one of them would replace Watson if and when the league decides to punish him.
