2022 NFL Week 3 ‘Sunday Night Football’ Takeaways & Highlights: Packers Brush Past Bucs, Panthers Stun Saints, Ravens Register High-Scoring Win vs Patriots

The Cleveland Browns defeated the Pittsburgh Steelers on Thursday night to begin Week 3 of the NFL season. When the Green Bay Packers and Tampa Bay Buccaneers were the featured afternoon games on Sunday Night Football, the activity picked up. Week 3 of the 2022 NFL season saw several games in the early going come down to the last frame once more.

Another football Sunday is almost in the books. Stunning the Chiefs were the Colts. The Commanders were annihilated by the Eagles. The Dolphins continued to be unblemished. And it was only a preview of Week 3 Sunday Night Football, with more prime-time games to come. In their separate careers, NFL stars Aaron Rodgers and Tom Brady have met five times. The Buccaneers defeated them 31–26 in their most recent encounter in the 2020 NFC Championship Game, advancing to the Super Bowl.

In an NFL where a strong pass rush has been the catalyst for every previous Super Bowl run, quarterbacks have it tough everywhere. However, Week 3 was marred by injuries to Jameis Winston, Justin Herbert, Tom Brady, and Tua Tagovailoa.

Key takeaways from Sunday Night Football week 3

Broncos 11-10 49ers: The host Denver Broncos defeated the San Francisco 49ers 11-10 thanks to a touchdown run by Melvin Gordon, 20-of-33 passing from Russell Wilson for 184 yards, and Gordon’s touchdown run. Offense problems for the Broncos won’t keep leading to victories.

When the Russell Wilson-led Broncos weren’t making mistakes or committing penalties, the 49ers’ pass rush would swarm them and stop their offense. During Jimmy Garoppolo’s opening game of the year, the well-known dangers of relying on him were glaringly apparent.

Packers 14-12 Bucs: The Packers appeared to be about to completely destroy the Buccaneers.

The Green Bay Packers defeated the Tampa Bay Buccaneers 14-12 on Sunday thanks to Aaron Rodgers’ victory in what may be his final showdown with Tom Brady. Rodgers threw for 255 yards and two first-half touchdowns.

Jaguars 38-10 Chargers: The visiting Jacksonville Jaguars defeated the injury-riddled Los Angeles Chargers 38-10 thanks to 100 yards of rushing from James Robinson, including a 50-yard touchdown run early in the third quarter.

The Jaguars shocked everyone by winning a road game for the first time since 2019 on Sunday. In Los Angeles, the Jaguars humiliated the Chargers for four consecutive quarters.

Rams 20-12 Cardinals: The Los Angeles Rams defeated the Arizona Cardinals 20-12 because of Matthew Stafford’s 249-yard passing performance and stout defense, which limited Arizona to four field goals.

Los Angeles’ defense prevented a touchdown from being scored while also limiting Arizona to a 0-for-2 performance in the end zone. The Cardinals were limited to only 70 yards on 21 attempts by the Rams, who were particularly difficult against the run.

Falcons 27-23 Seahawks: The Atlanta Falcons defeated the visiting Seattle Seahawks 27-23 thanks to 141 yards and a score on the ground from Cordarrelle Patterson, giving them their first win of the NFL season.

NFL games are challenging to win if you can’t shut down the opposing team’s attack, and the Seahawks struggled against Atlanta’s offensive in a contest when the Falcons only punted once.

Dolphins 21-19 Bills: In a 21-19 victory over Buffalo on Sunday, the Miami Dolphins defense held again after punter Thomas Morstead booted the ball off a teammate and out of bounds for a safety. Josh Allen and the Bills were stopped late at the goal line.

Ken Dorsey, the offensive coordinator for the Bills, embodied the team’s annoyance by hurling his headset, cap, and papers onto his desk as time expired.

Eagles 24-8 Commanders: The Philadelphia Eagles defeated the Washington Commanders 24-8 on Sunday to maintain their perfect record. DeVonta Smith hauled in eight catches from Jalen Hurts for a career-high 169 yards and a score. Carson Wentz struggled in his first game against the team that selected him.

After the first three games of the season, Hurts is the only player in NFL history to average 300 throwing yards per game and 50 running yards per game. Hurts is more than simply a potential MVP. One of the front-runners for the prize is him.

Bears 23-20 Texans: The Chicago Bears defeated the Houston Texans 23-20 thanks to Roquan Smith, who intercepted Davis Mills deep in Houston Texans territory and set up Cairo Santos’ game-winning field goal. With Khalil Herbert, the Bears’ offense is stronger.

The No. 2 running back ended with 20 touches for 157 yards and two touchdowns as Chicago climbed to 2-1 on the year. It only took one game of Herbert for this one to take shape.

Panthers 22-14 Saints: On Sunday, the Carolina Panthers upset the New Orleans Saints 22-14 to end a nine-game losing run. Laviska Shenault grabbed a 67-yard touchdown catch from Baker Mayfield, and Marquis Haynes returned a fumble 44 yards for a touchdown.

Although the passing game for the Panthers wasn’t terrific, Baker Mayfield did make a crucial play when he connected with Laviska Shenault Jr. for a 67-yard touchdown in the fourth quarter to seal the victory.

Colts 20-17 Chiefs: With 24 seconds left on Sunday Night Football, Indianapolis Colts quarterback Matt Ryan connected with rookie Jelani Woods for a 12-yard touchdown throw, leading the Colts to a 20-17 victory over the Kansas City Chiefs.

After Matt Ryan was sacked on third down, the Chiefs were thought to have stopped the Colts, but Chris Jones has assessed an unsportsmanlike conduct penalty, which allowed Indianapolis to gain a first down.

Ravens 37-26 Patriots: The Baltimore Ravens defeated the New England Patriots 37-26 on Sunday thanks to Lamar Jackson, who also scored on the ground. Jackson completed four touchdown passes.

On Sunday Night Football, the spirited Ravens were too much for New England to handle after narrowly defeating the Steelers in Week 3. They have few postseason chances because the Bills and Dolphins are the AFC East’s top teams. The Patriots are nearly dead.

Titans 24-22 Raiders: The Tennessee Titans never trailed against the Las Vegas Raiders on Sunday Night Football, defeating them 24-22 while Ryan Tannehill threw for 264 yards and a touchdown and ran for another.

If the Raiders defense hadn’t collapsed in the first half, they could have been able to win this game. The Raiders just did not have any answers for a Titans offense that scored on four of its five first-half drives throughout the first two quarters of the game.

Vikings 28-24 Lions: With 45 seconds left, Kirk Cousins found a wide-open K.J. Osborn for the game-winning 28-yard touchdown, and the Minnesota Vikings came from behind to defeat the Detroit Lions 28-24.

The Lions must develop their ability to win games. They lost a game they had control of early on after blowing a 10-point lead and being outscored 14-0 in the fourth quarter.

Bengals 27-10 Jets: The reigning AFC champion Cincinnati Bengals defeated the New York Jets 27-12 thanks to three touchdown touchdowns thrown by Joe Burrow.

A 56-yard touchdown reception by Bengals receiver Tyler Boyd in the first quarter to put Cincinnati up 14-6 was one of the game’s best moments. The Bengals can stay alive by splitting those two games, but they must protect Burrow and perform better in the first half against more challenging opposition. This overreaction then materializes.
