Yankees Trade Rumors : Looking to Trade Away Joey Gallo

One of the biggest trade possibilities surrounding the New York Yankees is that they’re looking to trade away Joey Gallo. His performance with the team has been poor offensively thus far. Last year, his batting average was .160 with 13 home runs. This season, in 70 games, his average is 0.166 and 10 home runs.

One of the players the team is most interested in is Kansas City Royals outfielder Andrew Benintendi. Benintendi has an average of 0.317 this season along with 3 home runs in 83 games so far. Benintendi is a left field, but he can also play center field, which will help alleviate some pressure off of Yankees’ Aaron Judge, who’s been starting at center field.

Benintendi used to play for the Boston Red Sox, one of the Yankees’ arch-rivals, and even helped them win the World Series championship back in 2018. However. the Yankees are looking to win this year, as they have the best record in the MLB currently (61-25). The team overall doesn’t have holes in their team but strengthening the outfield will make the Yankees an even harder team to beat.

However, Benintendi’s trade value is also increasing. According to the Yankees, his price is too much to trade for currently, so they’ve been looking at some other outfielders available to trade for and replace Gallo. Some teams for Gallo include the Texas Rangers and the San Diego Padres. Gallo performed amazingly for the Rangers in 2017 and 2018 back when he was on their team, landing All-Star status twice and hitting 40 home runs in back-to-back seasons.

According to Bob Nightengale of USA TODAY Sports, the Yankees also have a “fallback option” in Arizona Diamondbacks left fielder David Peralta. Both Benintendi and Peralta are on the final year of their contracts, making them free agents next year and can serve as rentals for this year in the hopes of a championship run for the Yankees.

Another possible trade is for Chicago Cubs outfielder Ian Happ. However, this is unlikely to happen because Happ is signed through 2023, and the Yankees might have to give up some promising players in exchange.

No matter what, the Yankees see Joey Gallo as a liability to their team and are looking to move him as quickly as possible before the August 2 trade deadline.
