Yankees Owner Hal Steinbrenner Is Confused With How Upset Yankees Fans Are With Josh Donaldson & Team Struggles

The Yankees’ owner claimed on “The Michael Kay Show” on Wednesday that he didn’t understand why the team’s issues are so upsetting to Yankees supporters.

The New York Yankees are keeping him in the lineup despite his problems. They think he needs more opportunities to bat in order to regain his pre-2022 form.

“They are upset,” Steinbrenner said about Yankee fans. “I’m a little confused, this year, being the third week of June, why they’re so upset, but they’re upset and that’s gonna get my attention, of course.”

“Nobody is on the hot seat right now,” Steinbrenner later added. “Let’s get through the season. Let’s see what happens.”

On Wednesday, during a 3-1 victory against the Mariners, some of that fan angst was shown on the field when struggling veteran Josh Donaldson was jeered after grounded into a double play in the bottom of the sixth inning.

He has only appeared in 17 games so far this season. As he recovered from a hamstring issue, Donaldson spent the first part of the season on the injured list. He’s been ice-cold, slashing ever since getting back from the IL.151/.233/.491. When supporters traded for him in 2022, they were not expecting this player at all.

As seen by the harsh reception former outfielders Aaron Hicks and Joey Gallo had during their protracted slumps in the Bronx, Yankee fans are quick to turn on failing sluggers.

Many of those offensive setbacks may be ascribed to a trio of slumping veterans that the Yankees rely on: DJ LeMahieu, Giancarlo Stanton, and Anthony Rizzo, who have all had OPS below.600 over the past 14 days.

With a record of 40-33 going into Wednesday’s game, the New York Yankees are 10 games out of first place in the fiercely contested American League East. Hal Steinbrenner’s squad trounced the Seattle Mariners on Tuesday, but they were still reeling from the Boston Red Sox’s three-game weekend sweep of them.
