Yankees’ Luis Severino, Aaron Boone Fume Over ‘Stupid’ Pitch Clock Call

Late in Spring Training, New York Yankees starting pitcher Luis Severino and manager Aaron Boone are still having some issues with the new MLB regulations.

Yankees’ Luis Severino, Aaron Boone Fume Over ‘Stupid’ Pitch Clock Call

Severino was getting ready to face Austin Meadows of the Detroit Tigers in the top of the fourth inning of Tuesday’s exhibition game when the right-hander was called for a pitch clock violation, which led to a ball four and a walk, as reported by Dan Martin of the New York Post and Randy Miller of NJ Advance Media for NJ.com.

The right-hander was called for a violation for letting the clock expire with one out in the top of the fourth and Detroit’s Austin Meadows at the plate.

The pitch clock operator ruled the 15-second pitch clock with no one on base had expired before Severino started his motion, but the Yankees disagreed.

Severino angrily contested that he hadn’t begun his motion in a timely manner.

“That was stupid,” he said of the call. “I still think that was not a violation because I saw the clock and it was still at two [seconds] and I started doing the windup.”

According to the new regulations, a pitcher would be assessed a ball if he does not start “the action to throw a pitch” before the clock runs out, according to a story written by ESPN’s Jesse Rogers on February 13. Boone said that the decision on Tuesday was due to a buzzer operator’s error, who misinformed the plate umpire about Severino’s purported transgression.

“I don’t know if it was the operator getting excited to buzz for the first time,” Boone remarked. “I had an issue with that, and I’m right.”

“I thought [the call] was a whiff and not on Jerry’s part because they’re going off the vibration [of the buzzer],” Aaron Boone said. “To me, it was a clear non-violation … I thought that was really wrong.”

There is still time for the league to make adjustments to the new rules and Jose Trevino said, “I think MLB is going to do whatever MLB wants to do at this point. There are rumblings, I hear, of them modifying something here in the last week. But everybody’s guess is just as good as mine.”

“Overall, I like the clock,” Boone said. “I think it’s great. I think it’s gonna be great, but there are a few nuanced things that could, of course, be better.”
