Yankees Are Charging Fans For Sponsor Patches Now? But How Much?

Friday afternoon was the New York Yankees’ home opener for the 2024 MLB season. One of the worst promos ever was part of their Opening Day festivities.

Yankees Are Charging Fans For Sponsor Patches Now? But How Much?

Their intention was to impose a fee for attaching a sponsor patch on their shirts.

Fans of the New York Yankees are going crazy about a new campaign that lets them put the Starr Insurance “Official Sponsor Patch” to their jersey for a sweet $15.

I’m not sure if STARR or New York came up with this concept, but it’s really stupid. I’m a Yankees fan and have many jerseys. Not to boast.

I didn’t once think, “This jersey is so inauthentic because it doesn’t have a sponsorship patch,” once. I never once wanted to personalize any of my jerseys with free advertising for a business I’ve never heard of.

The patches on professional jerseys are so awful that we, the supporters, never really wanted them on there. We acknowledge that they provide an extra revenue stream and have come to terms with their permanence.

The absurd thing about this is that it was already terrible enough that the storied New York team sold out and adorned their famous uniform with a massive patch the previous season.

But to then outright, haughtily, and ridiculously ask supporters whether they would like to PAY to have their hard-earned money added to their own jerseys? Are you joking with me? Ah, the tone deafness.

Imagine for a moment what George Steinbrenner is contemplating. Really?

I wouldn’t even think of spending money on a ticket, some hot dogs, a few beers, and then more money to turn myself into a walking billboard. It is genuinely absurd.

To begin with, the STARR Insurance patches are ugly. That alone should be enough to make me never, ever have one on my shirt. To be honest, I would rather pay money not to receive the patch than to pay money to receive it. I want there to be no advertisements on my shirt.

The sponsorship patch campaign in New York is amusing.
