World Cup 2022 Yellow Card Rules: Elaborated!

The FIFA accumulation of yellow card regulations is meant to stop players from being suspended and missing the World Cup championship game.

World Cup Yellow Card Rule

After the World Cup 2022 quarterfinals, players will no longer have any lingering yellow cards thanks to a 2010 FIFA rule change.

If a player receives a single yellow card in two different games between the start of the group stage and the conclusion of the last eight, they are subject to a one-match suspension.

They are then given a fresh start for the semifinals (but must still serve a ban in the last four if they accrued a second booking in the quarters).

Only if a player is sent off in the semifinals can they now be suspended for the championship game.

As tensions mount and clumsy challenges are made, there have already been a lot of bookings in the first round of matches of the 2022 World Cup.

In the first 16 games in Qatar, a total of 52 yellow cards were sent out, which has led to many concerns about the suspension guidelines in place.

Which players are suspended?

The following players have picked up two yellow cards and will miss the next game:

  • Alireza Jahanbakhsh (Iran)
  • Jhegson Mendez (Ecuador)

The following players have been sent off and will miss the next game:

  • Wayne Hennessey (Wales)

Pre-2010, a yellow could rule a player out of the World Cup final

Yellow cards were eliminated after the group stage prior to the World Cup in South Africa twelve years ago.

FIFA, however, was compelled to change its regulations after several high-profile instances of players missing the World Cup championship game due to a suspension received for a booking in the semifinals.

Michael Ballack, who famously led Germany in Die Mannschaft’s surreal run to the 2002 championship game, was disqualified from the championship match after receiving his second yellow card of the knockout stages in the last-four victory over co-hosts South Korea.
