Martindale “spoke his piece, got up, slammed the door and walked out of the building,” according to the New York Post, following the Giants’ dismissal of defensive assistant Kevin Wilkins and outside linebackers coach Drew Wilkins. Drew Wilkins was regarded as Martindale’s right-hand man, and the two had travelled over from Baltimore with Martindale.

The root of the imminent breakup is the tumultuous relationship between Daboll and Martindale. November saw reports that the two were in a “bad place.”

Due to significant conflict among the coaching staff, the negative emotions have persisted throughout the summer.

There is a deep-seated rivalry between head coach Brian Daboll and defensive coordinator Don “Wink” Martindale. Martindale’s future with the squad is in doubt since it is said that he is not pleased with some of the personnel adjustments Daboll is making.

After the event on Monday, a source stated that they anticipated Martindale’s resignation. As of Tuesday night, the Giants had still not heard from Martindale. He arrived back to his Sarasota, Florida, residence on Tuesday afternoon.

Martindale’s contract is set to expire in one year. According to The Post, he owes $3 million.

If Martindale resigns, the Giants might be able to stop him from playing for another club. If that were the case, this could get even uglier.

Martindale and Daboll’s animosity has been simmering for a while. In late November, Fox Sports’ Jay Glazer stated that the two were at odds, with an increasing feeling of tension between them felt across the company.

“These guys are in a bad place,” Glazer said. “Bad place to the point where I don’t see them actually continuing their relationship after the season, maybe not even during the season. It could be a mutual parting of the ways.”

This week looked to be the breaking point for that strain. Paul Schwartz of The New York Post reports that Martindale and Daboll had a meeting on Monday to talk about upcoming adjustments to the coaching staff.

Throughout the season, there had been whispers that neither of the coordinators was happy: Martindale due to his relationship with Daboll, and Kafka because of how he was sidelined as Daboll took on more responsibility for the offense. Like Martindale, Kafka’s contract is expiring in one year.

There “was a feeling in the building that Martindale and Drew Wilkins were creating their own fiefdom within the coaching staff, at times bypassing Daboll and believing they had to answer only to each other and, ultimately, ownership,” according to The Post, which stated Daboll was adamant about getting rid of Drew Wilkins and, by extension, Kevin Wilkins.

Martindale is still the Giants’ defensive coordinator as of Wednesday morning. It doesn’t appear probable, though, that he will continue in his position.

The New York Post claims that despite reports earlier in the day that Martindale had quit, the Giants had not received anything from him regarding a possible departure. Although Martindale did not submit an official resignation, Ralph Vacchiano of Fox Sports stated that Martindale “is not staying — it’s over.”

Martindale has a contract that expires in 2024. Under the terms of the agreement, he is owed $3 million, but if he quits, he would lose that money.
